You've really got to watch for toxic salt accumulation in the low spots. It sounds like a good area to plant cattails and trees as a seclusion area for the deer.

don't know how much the deer will eat it, but canary grass (need to buy improved varieties w/o alkaloids) would grow well at that site (will tolerate the wettest and driest of conditions). It also produces seed for other critters.
I believe that alsike clover will tolerate wetter conditions. maybe a mix of the two. the more clover the better

I've often heard that a stategically placed tree planting can help keep the standing water to a minimum. I've seen where farmers plant willows allong the lowest line of a field to help "take-up" excess water in the springtime.

just a thought - even if its long term.

As far as planting where water stands year after year - I'd advise against a perenial - and would lean towards an attractive annual like oats, rye, or crimson clover - plant after it dries up - regardless of the time of year.

This may be a perfect spot for Cypress. They love water.

I cant offer any advice about what to plant, but i can tell you from experiance and lots of wasted hard work, not to plant corn in an area that is wet and has poor drainage. Especially if you have to put the corn in by hand, because when you do and it drowns you get mad. (from personal experiance). this is just my experiance, others may have had success but i didnt.
