Default July planting in Central VA?

A friend has some open land behind his house that we might plant. Is there anything that can be planted now and be useful? Or should we just wait until late summer/early fall and make a fall planting. It is hot now, but looks like we are getting plenty of rain. What do you guys think? I have never planted anything to attract game before. What is best to plant now (July)? What is best to plant early fall? We won' t be hunting right over the stuff, but would like to attract and hold some deer in the area.

thanks for your help,

Dayton

You can try broadcast planting some soybeans or iron clay peas.
