Slot limits
Last summer we built a pond on our property by daming up a rivine fed by a spring and runoff from the fields around it. We are going to start stalking it this spring and it will probably be a couple of years before we start harvesting some of the fish. It will contain crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. I want to manage it for quality fish but at the same time have a healthy population. the pond is about 1 1/2 to 2 acres and was wondering what is a good slot limit for each species and at what rate should we harvest the fish? Also, I was wondering how long it should take for our pond to fill up, its just under half full and we have had quite a bit of percipitation and am surprised it isnt more full, should I be worried?

Honestly I would hire a fish biologist to help. He will measure the average depth, actual size and will get a good idea of the amount of watershed you have. Water test will tell if the water needs additives such as lime. Then he can tell how many and what species of fish you need as well as the potential need of downed trees for fish cover. The watershed amount and amount of rain will determine the rate of the pond filling up.

start by stocking "bait fish" like brim, shiners and minnows. if you just start throwing game fish in like cats, bass, etc., they will starve to death if there isn't PLENTY of bait fish. bass and cats eat alot. you also gotta think about habitat. make sure there is some structure in the water for the fish to hide and ambush their food. you're trying to make it as natural as you can.
