dan...thats a neat lookin tool thats for sure! when i say cicle i think of the long "hooked" blade you commonly see..then i think if something else on a long handle for swinging like a golf club with a head like that axe has. i think one may be called a sye or stye or something like that. i dont know lol. the hemlocks i seen wont take all tooo much effort to clear out around. probably one of them rakes with the 15 or so bigger straight teeth will be a good tool for me. we will see..that axe does look neat though..

head..thanx for looking into that. if we go with planting more i'll keep sawtooths in mind. been reading a bit about them and they do sound good. itll be an interesting project..so many options...so little time. i may not get a chance to plant anything. or maybe i'll do it on my own time on my good will.. see what happens. and i gotta take a deeper look at the area. though it was logged decintly heavily them mighty oaks sure drown out sunlight. plus i didnt look around to see how much of whats already growing..so thats another factor i gotta look at.

In any management plan the first thing you need to think of are the applicable laws, but in your case, since this will be a pretty minimal plan, you need to consider the landowner's wishes. If he doesn't want the slash piles, get rid of them. He obviously didn't use a consultant to sell his timber, or they would have addressed that issue and he wouldn't be complaining. Tell him he probably got ripped off on his sale too (just kidding).

If you have an aerial and topo of the area, I'd be more than happy to help you out with some suggestions. Just planting random trees is not always needed, so the best thing you can do starting out is to identify the composition of his land and map out the habitat types. Knowing exactly where you are starting makes it easier to get where you are going.

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have...I am not on here a whole heckuva lot any more... [email protected]

im doing a habitat management project for an ecology class. my professor hooked me up with a land owner. he loves the outdoors and loves wildlife. loves to hunt and be outside and be active and just loves to see wildlife period. he owns 100 acres. its a mix of old fields that are occassionally farmed(he is trying to get food plots put in) some hard woods that was moderatly selectively cut. some of the area is marshy/swampy. its all pretty flat. the hard woods are mostly oak..i actually forgot to look but know i seen alot of oak.

i found a nursery that he may be elegible for 500 free 1yo bare root seedlings. if not they are 25cents a piece so thats still not bad at all. my first thought was crabapples. deer and turkey love crabapples and i seen atleast 1 crabapple tree growing and he mowed around it and put a mini food plot around it.

i dont know much about planting trees though..though since its been logged i think tree planting would be a good way to go. any other recomendations of trees?? we are in north western PA. when would tree planting time be best??

also..he already has seedling hemlocks planted along an ollllld railroad bed he drives his Gator on. they are surrounded by brush already and tiny little trees. maybe 4-10 inches. id like to ensure they grow. whats the best way to do that?? just clear the brush from around them and make sure they are stable??

also want to make some nice brush piles with the slashings left from the logging operation. it was a while ago but he hates the brush and bramble in the woods and wants to burn it. i think we should make brush piles.

any ideas..thoughts..recommendations etc?? i didnt talk to him about the trees yet but he should like the idea..i thought of it after i left..after i do my research and get solid ideas ill talk it over with him.

thanx guys...

Yeah, kill all of the hemlock and introduce a non-native, possibly invasive species. Lets put in some beehives and put killer bees in there too. Does he have a crocodile pond? If not, he should!

ORIGINAL: HEAD0001

Check into Sawtooth Oak. Grows fast and yields large amounts of mass fast. Kill all the Hemlock, it is of no value. No wildlife value, and not merchantible for timber. Hemlock will drown out sun for other valuable species. Wow my Wood Science degree was not for nothing. Tom.

I read about the sawtooth a while back. Said they will produce acornsin about 4 to 5 years. I think I may want to get some of these. Do you have a link or website for the NWTF? Does anyone mabe know of a nursery that carries these.

Thanks

Invasive? Killer bees are suppose to make the best honey. I figure the owner could probably outrun the bees with his 4-wheeler. And it sure would be fun to shoot a crocodile, but I would still vote against it. Too many people may hear about them, and then the owner would have a trespassing problem. Spoken like a true "Opossum Protector". And then there is the foresters favorite joke. What is more beautiful than a forest full of trees? Answer: A field full of stumps.

The forestry school is always the most hostile school on campus. It is the only place where you combine tree huggers, tree cutters, and opossum protectors in the same building. I watched many conflicts over the years.

Everybody must learn how to give and take a little. I read that in Africa the only place wildlife is flourishing is where they have a positive impact on the economy. An easy way to have wildlife flourish here is to make the environment conducive to the wildlife and have a positive economic impact to the owner. The problem is that tree huggers and PETA are totally unwilling to give an inch. And at the same time they are unwilling to lend an economic hand. Tom.

HEAD0001..i can kinda relate to forestry classes. im actually not a forestry major. im a Park and Resource Management/park law enforcement major. but in some of my general major classes i have classes with a few anti hunters/vegitarians etc. makes for interesting discussions and such. the antis etc always seem to blurt out their feelings. funny alot of us hunt we just kinda sit there and let them talk their peace. it never got hostile or anything...just the usual how can you kill animals etc etc. the classes i have these projects due is natural history/ecology and the other is a really general wildlife management course. my college doesnt have forestry or wildlife management or wildlife biology etc. kinda wish we did so i could take them as electives or something..but im there for the LE part of the program anyways..if i ever plan to become a "professional student lol" and farther my education im going elsewhere to get other classes..
