Best food plot cultivator of the average hunter
What is the best route for the average hunter that wants to put food plots in. Where the food plots will be made is on the outskirts of cutovers and on old logging roads.
Am I better off renting a tractor or a pull behind disc chopper and harrow or one of these all in one cultivators. I don't want to spend a bunch, just something that will do the job well and that I can pull behind a fourwheeler.
thanks

The no-til method...
What would make it easy is a boom type sprayer on the back of your ATV for using round-up. Also a ATV mount or Tow behind spreader for dispensing lime and fertilizers. A tow behind mower set to 6-8" would be a luxury.

I would rent/borrow a tractor in the 35 HP or better range with a good cutting 8 foot adjustable disc. Cut it up real good, go ahead and take your soil samples, fertilize and seed. You can spread the fertilizer and seed by hand. Next spring you need to lime as recommended.

My new food plotter and hunting ground beast is a kubota L3000dt , fwd w/ front end loader. 5' bush hog and 6' disc and box blade to keep those roads smooth. looking for a breaking plow.
expensive but the best way.
and my home made spreader for my four wheeler. 15 gallon drum with 12 volt motor and feeder spreader. sheetmetal guard to keep that seed or fert. from hitting me. works great. just my opinion.

Hey Reb, I'm interested in the spreader. I'm a welder and can do it. Just need a few particulars on how you did it. Can you spread lime with it too? A picture would be good but a short discription and how you did it would be helpful to me... please. terry

RE: Best food plot cultivator of the average hunter
lawnfarmer, i refused to pay what northern tool wanted for one so i created my own .
ok i took a metal 15 gallon drum with banded top. then i made two hole for two 1/2 x 3 bolts in the bottom on the side . i tightened two nuts to hold them onto the barrel. kind of like studs . i then built me a sheet metal guard by really just bending it to fit as i didn't have bender.but i left enough on the top to make two elongated holes that fit over them there studs. this is so i can adjust the height of the spreader mechanism. and again use two nuts w/ lock washers to hold it.
now back to the guard i left enough to be able to bend parallel to the bottom of the bucket. this is where i'll mount the motor. now being that i have contacts and all i got me a free 12 volt motor off of a camper fan from my friends camper dealership. i just drilled me two holes in a coffee can ,yes a coffee can,the bottom of the can cause the bottom is going to be the top on the spreader. and then mounted the motor w/ the two screws provided on the motor. drill a hole to run the wiring out the side and get enough wire to go to a 12 volt rect. on your wheeler. add a 12 plug and oh yeah a switch is nice. i found one of them to in the scrap at the camper store.
ok now the motor and housing is ready( remove the folgers logo)
i first riveted it to the sheet metal that is parellel to the drum but this didn't last long and now have added two screws with oversize washers.
ok for a spreader mechanism (terminology)i bought a moultrie upgrade for the feeder. 9.95 at wal mart in the sporting goods section.fits right on the 12 volt motor shaft and even tightens with included hex screw.
now another hurdle , mounting to the four wheeler, i all ready had built a tree stand carrier a few years ago. actually montana jack stole my idea. i took 1" inch sq. tubing that fits inside the 1 1/4 " tubing of the stand carrier. well once it's in there i have a 3/8 nut welded to the 1 1/4 tubing and a screw? round stock to aid in tightening. i just tighten it down and it's there.
man my fingers hurt. i have never tried lime but have spread tick granules. oh yeah i added sheet metal sliding door on the bottom to stop or restrict the flow of whatever i am spreading.
If i had a picture i would figure out a way to show you. you wouldnt steal my idea would you . and if you did i would expect royaltys.
maybe i can figure out how. give me a little time and i may draw it out . it wasn't hard i just messed with it over a few months instead of playing on this thing.

Hey Reb, is it o.k. to print your directions? I don't plan to infringe on your patent, I just want to build the damn thing. I'm pretty good at the do'n and not much on the think'n. And I really do appreciate your reply, not so much that I'm a tight wad, just broke most of the time. I'd retire if I didn't have to live in poverty. terry

Lawnfarmer sure man . i know the feeling of broke and i guess i am a little bit of a tightwad. i hate to make someone else rich.
but more than that i like doing it for myself. i hope i explained it ok. if i knew how to do the picture thing i would. i tell you what let me work on a drawing or something and i'll e mail it to you.
you know they were talking about sprayers for four wheelers . i have been dreaming up a boom for my wheeler with wicks to kill those tall ceder weeds. i just have to get started. there is a chemical that will kill them with just a touch of the wick . i say one in a magazine now i'll have to build my own version. .

So Ar Rebel,
I am a drafter by trade, if you'd email me some scanned in hand drawings, I could make you some nice CAD drawings.
Patrick

Patrick, If you get a drawing from the Rebel would you please send me one of your high tech. ones? I'm still a little fuzzy with his discription. I don't think I need the illustrated parts breakdown, or the price list. Wouldn't hurt though. Hahaha terry
