It's probably more of a technicality. These are probably not "certified" for being sold as seed. This means they are not tested for germination, cleaned to seed quality, or guaranteed to be any specific variety.

They should still grow just fine. The oats you bought were probably meant for resale as feed, which is a lot cheaper than oats for sale as seed.

You got what we call feed grade oats. We have planted a lot of them.

They're working for me. The germination rate may be poor but you get a crop which is just fine for deer feed.

Everyone here is right. The feed oats may be a couple of years old, and full of weed seeds - or not - there is no guarantee - It would be possible that you might only get 60-75% germination. Usally they are just combined oats from a local source, and seed well - and the price is right at $6-8/50 lb bag. Certified seed is guaranteed to have a minimum of weed seeds, which can be important if planted as a nurse crop for clover, but is not necessary at all if planted just as a fall attractant crop for deer.

Just make sure they are whole, and not rolled, or cracked. Sometimes feed oats are cracked for better digestion to livestock - its usually clearly marked though.

Good luck

I can only tell you about the deer in South Texas where we have oats. The deer will eat it from the time it comes up until the time it is combined.

Also, SoArk... email me I have some questions for you. I want to see where you hunt and so forth. I have a lease in Emmerson and Magnolia Ark. I have some questions about food plots and other things..
