Personally, I'd have let them walk.

Thanks for the responses. Glad to see that everyone is basically on the same page as me. Or should I say, that I'm on the same page as everybody else, )

My OWN morals say that when the fawns are still spotted, taking the mother doe is just not right. Skeeter 7mm kinda hit on why I feel that way...."I would hate to be a family breaker."

There is no right or wrong answer here. The seasons are set such that if a mother gets shot, the fawns should survive. Normally I prefer shooting a doe without fawns, but if one comes by with big fawns, I will take her.

Some things are true whether you believe them or not.

Like alot of you, I would have let her walk. Later in the season I might take the shot. The fawns will be that much older into the season.

I'd let them walk too. I know it probably sounds kooky, but I would feel terrible about shooting a fawns Mommy right in front of him.

My Brother-in-law told me once of shooting a doe in mid November, and having to keep chasing a fawn away from her so he could dress her out. I would have cried my eyes out, right there.

I'll take good luck over skill any day!

Early in the season almost all of the fawns are small and spotted. I will not shoot a doe until after New Years.

I would let them walk early in the season. Later on might have to look at the situation.

Well acorrding to science, when a fawn loses its spots it dont need its mother anymore, but if it was up to me i would do the same a you and let it walk.

In my book you did the right thing. I always let does walk if they have little ones with them. I even let does walk late in the season b/c they have most likely been bred already and that might just be that future buck I'm looking for that she's about to bear.
