Thanks for all the replies guys. Killer, the shotgun season lasts all of 2 weekends (2 weeks apart) so I will not be setting up a permanent tree stand. Can you elaborate on the ways to get up the tree. Would be nice to leave the stand up there for the weekend but how do I get up and down?

if you talking about a hanging stand that just sits up in the tree... then there are several ways to get up and down. "tree climbing steps"

you can use ladder sections that hook to the tree.

or

you can use step sticks.

or

you can use steps that screw into the tree.

there are probably more ways that i have overlooked. check out cabelas, basspro, walmart, and any other outdoors store or website.

I believe the best height is at least 15 Ft above the ground. You could go higher (and I often do) depending on the surrounding terrain. I never exceed 25 feet.
