You never quite realize the sights and smell of hunting season until you close your eyes and are taken back to that cold crisp November morning. You are so cold watching your breath as it hits your scope, fogging up the lens for a split second while listening to the frost as it crumples under your feet. Then the sun peeks out over the next ridge and slowly warms your face. It is the only time in my life I have been so cold, yet so warm at the same time. It's as if Mother Nature can't make up her mind. It is at this time that the smells begin to rise as the warmth from the sun heats up the ground. I never realized that dirt had a smell, let alone that I would look forward to it every year. The leaves come to life for one last dance and then fall back to rest mere feet from where they started. I sit there just taking everything in, watching the world unfold in front of me just mesmerized by the repetitious fog that rises in front of me each time I exhale. I never realized that something so simple as breathing on a cold morning, the first day of deer season would be something that could keep me in anticipation all year...but I'm glad it does.

I love the smell of fall, theres just something about it. When all the leaves change and it starts getting colder. That smell in the air just drives me wild, no matter what mood im in i always cheer up when fall is coming. Then theres the sound of game approaching you through the dry leaves on the ground, its enough to make your heart jump through your chest.
I just plain love the Autumn season. The smells, the sights, the humbling feeling of witnessing the power of the outdoors. I get absolutely giddy when I exit the truck on that first frosy November morning when my annual weekly rut hunt begins. The smell of the forest...crispy leaves, earth, the smell of a rutting buck coming my way, the sound of frosty leaves crunching in a rythym that only a deer can make....

I want to be there now, but it only happens once a year. Maybe it's best that way, we can't take it for granted since it's so short and so spectacular.

There are soooo many different things I love about the woods.................

The sight of big antlers against brown leaves

The sight of Big antlers against green leaves

The sight of big antlers against red leaves

The sight of big antlers next to a huge Oak, a small oak, a maple or............any tree

The sound of big antlers rubbing a huge oak, a small oak, a maple or............any tree

The sound of footsteps in the leaves of something thats carrying big antlers.

The sound of the autum breeze blowing through big antlers......

Yup I sure do love ALL of nature

The last couple of weeks any kind of a breeze. It has been extremely hot on me lately and if there is a breeze the timber keeps it up and away from where I am.

You guys are going to laugh at this one. SKUNK......for real.....The smell of skunk drives me nuts each fall. It totally reminds me of deer hunting and getting out in the woods each fall. I think it has something to do with when I started bowhunting. I think I was 12 and for the first 5 or 6 years I always used Skunk Scent at my stand as a cover scent. My mom alway swore my hunting clothes permanently smelled of skunk.

20 + years later.......I'm driving in the trunk smell skunk and immediatly want to pullover and climb a tree!!

Good Luck!

This doesn't happen in the woods but my favorite thing about hunting is that peaceful calm on a duck slough once you have your decoys set out and you are just waiting for shooting time to arrive. It will be dead quite and too dark to see but a flock of ducks will drop into your slough and sound like a screaming missle going over your head. You don't know what they were or where they are at but at that time there is no place I would rather be.
