Your pretty far south ,could be there fighting.I seen deer and doe fight with each other all times of the year.Just last night I had a big doe eating in my yard and she kept kicking and front hoofing a smaller doe that was trying to eat.

I've hunted my whole life in the south(La.)and here is what I've encountered over the years. With the relativly mild weather we have, and the tendancy of alot of our deer herds to be askew as far as buck/doe ratios, the rut that we see where I hunt is often rather subtle and drawn out over a long period of time.Very much different from what some of our northern and mid-western hunters experience.
This being said, you may have run up on a couple sparring bucks, but most likely it was the food source and not a breeding rights battle.
We had the best rutting activity in my neck of the woods this season right around the middle of November, but it varies widely, and some years we see almost none.

It's very possible. I have seen video tape of a buck in the wild mounting a doe as late as early March.
