Shootem, there are literally dozens of good calibers from the .243 on up for deer hunting.
The .308 is an excellent choice though! It is reasonably flat shooting, and hard hitting caliber that will take out any deer! The .308 will also work well on larger game too, along as you don't try to stretch the range too far.
As for recoil, that depends on the style and weight of the gun, the type of action it is, and the particular loads that you are shooting. It shouldn't be too bad and probably compares to the 12 ga. recoil!
The .308 would be a great choice, but I'll have to say, look at the 7MM-08 also! It will do all that the .308 will do, with flatter trajectory and less recoil too!

You'll get a million different answers based on everyone's preference (my pref is a 25.06 or my 300mag) but JagMagMan gave you some great info.

.308 is an excellent deer round and is pretty versatile for other big game too.

If it is a good gun, it will be as capable as you are, or better!

I use a .270 winchester. It works great for mulies out to 300 yds. a .308 is more of an elk rifle in my experience...

308 excellent choice for deer and has a tolerable recoil. I like the 700's personally and they have always performed well for me, many other good ones as well but buy the one you like and fits you to a T...you'll be happy you did.

The 308 is easily capable of shooting a lot further accurately than most of the shooter behind the trigger. Head out to the range and find out what that is for you personally, you'll only get better with practice
