RE: How Long?
Depends on how much time you have. I have sat in a few of the blinds on my place and not seen anything for a day or two then things pick back up. Also if you have others in your area you can determine quickly if things are moving around you or not. If you picked a spot that has good sign that it is a well used route then I would hang a while.

Nope that is why I prefer to hunt on the ground, you don't get hung up or to comfortable with one spot. If you hunt stands or single location one of the best pieces of gear you can buy are a camtrakker, they at least tell you if your in the right spot or not.

RE: How Long?
I hunt ground stands. But i was hunting first day of PA rifle season in the same spot about 7 hours when i left and moved after only seeing one deer that i could shoot at (that was at full tilt running for its life). We left & came back3 hours later & i ended up seeing 2 does & shooting my first buck.
