If I do have to replace the scope, what kind should I get?

Deerslayer, I have ruger mark II stainless and it became a great gun right after I replaced the trigger and stock and it went from 5 inch groups at 100 yards to nickel size groups. It's a 7mm rem mag and shoots 1-1/2" groups at 300 yards.

My new elk rig (that'll probably kill any deer in the woods) is a:

Tikka Whitetail Hunter Magnum blued/synthetic .300 Win Mag with a 3.5-10x Leupold Vari-X III. It puts three 180 gr Remington bullets into half an inch... it shoots way better than I do.

(aside: these are some creepy smileys)

DS22, scope brands/models really depends on your funds. For the money a good scope optics/clarity/brightness and performance wise the Bushnell Elite 3200 would be considered one of the best bangs for your buck in the market today. For a reasonable priced piece of glass this would be my suggestion, yet other may suggest different ones. I have experience with this scope and thus can reccomend it based on in field/personal experience.

If you can give us a dollar amount it would help eliminate or include brands/ models like the Vari xIII by Leupold, Zeist conquest & so on which are great scope but have a price attached to them as well

I will probably use the one it comes with for a season or two. After that, I will probably be able to spend about $250 AT MAX.

I was also looking at the Simmons scopes. What do you think?
