Hunting stands or ground?

huummmmm
Well, I used to hunt the ground, but my friend bought a summit viper xls and I climbed in it once and I was hooked! I went the next week and bought one. That was two years ago and I now stay in the trees. My friend, the same one that had the treestand, broke his leg (horse fell on him) and he bought a ameristep groundblind and put it on the pipeline and the deer don't pay it any attention at all. I went up there and put it up for him and the next day he hunted out of it and say bookoos of deer and not one of them spooked. Either way treestand or ground it's hunting and I am in love with it

gotta hike
I just can't use a stand. I've tried it a few times, just doesn't do the trick. Heck, I can't even stay still that long from on the ground. I have to stalk, and track, and push, and go to the deer. Sitting and waiting for them to come to me just doesn't agree with me. If you have that much patience more power to you, but I do just fine chasing them around.

I like a stand for more than one reason, but the main reason is you will see more deer from a stand, you take the same hunting spot and you will see more if you are in a tree. Some places I hunt I can see a good 50 or 75 yards farther than I can hunting on the ground by just getting up above the brush.

I've hunted both ways.I much rather be in a stand in a good ambush spot. There is nothing like it when the deer come walking thru and you can take some time for a kill shot. I see far more deer from sitting in a stand than anything else. The only time I like hunting from the ground during rifle season is when there is a fresh snow and I can pick up a fresh set of tracks and push after them.

Tree stands all the way! I have 10 chain on tree stands, a Summit climbing stand and 2 permanent wooden built stands. Once I switched to tree stands my deer sightings and success rate went way up. Occasionaly I will hunt from the ground, but I just prefer being in the air.

Safety is worth mentioning. The direction of fire from a stand is generally safer since the projectile will hit the ground sooner than from firing from ground level. On the flip side, I've never been wild about climing in and out of a stand when it's dark, the steps may be weak, wet, icy, etc.
Either way, pay extra attention to what lies beyond your shot direction, especially at ground level. When climbing a ladder, think through each move (make every move deliberate) rather than just lollygagging up and down the ladder. I always make it a point to have at least one hand (if not both hands) firmly holding the rung above before putting my full weight with my foot on the next rung below. Also, try placing your weight on the outsides of the rungs instead of near the center as this will decrease the possiblity that a rung will fail.
This info. may be obvious to some, but others may not give it much thought since it seems "routine".
