It' s scary to think people just let the lead fly. If they see any part of a deer they just start blasting. I like to hunker down and sit because it' s scary to walk especially durring the last two weeks of the season.

I have pretty much stopped gun hunting in MO. The area I have permission to hunt sounds like a war zone! I was in a stand one time when I heard bullets hitting the tree tops around me. That ended my day!
An earlier post hit the nail on the head...it has to do with parents, grandparents, or whoever the person first started hunting with. Whatever that first time hunter sees is what is engrained in his mind as being correct.
We, as a whole have to get to the kids before the idiots do.

When I was growing up, my dad bought me a single shot shotgun to learn to hunt with. I thought he was just being cheap. Now I thank him every day for that. I knew in my mind that I had only one shot so a second shot was never considered. I learned so much at that young age about ethics and I didn' t recognize it as such until I was much older. Sometimes I listen to others talk about how they shot at a deer at a couple hundred yards and got hair and blood and never really looked for the deer or fired off three or four shots and sit back down and begin stuffing shells back in their gun. I take that back with me. I go home and put my rifle in the gun cabinet and get out the old shot gun that my dad gave me years ago and take it the woods.
Thanks Dad.
Thanks Dad.

I agree very much with this post. I' m only 19 and have only been hunting for about 6 years. In those 6 years, I have not bagged my first deer, you might be like, well he' s not much of a hunter but that' s not true. I' ve had my fair share of could have, and should have, but still haven' t. In my early years, we didn' t have very good land for many reasons and the deer were moving at nite only, last year we found new land full of deer. I could have got a doe last year and a small buck. Even though it will be my first deer, I wouldn' t be satisfied. Just this past weekend, I could have took a fairly nice 8 pointer, but I wasn' t ready to shoot, and I know that there are better that I will probably have in front of me. I jumped the deer when I was walking out and I didn' t know where my uncle and father were around me so I didn' t take the shot. I did take a shot at a nice doe earlier during bow season, but somehow it ended up as a bad shot and ended up striking her in her back hip and I felt really bad that it was such a bad shot. I did track her for an hour, but the blood trail wasn' t there after a distance.
I also have a weird belief about stuff. I would rather take one with bow than gun, for one, it' s more satisfying, having to get the deer close enough to take a shot, and another, well gun you don' t have to be such perfect. I remember that the last 2 years I sat in my stand with a bow, when i counted the gun shots going on around me. This year I decided that I would use my gun only becuase if the big one we' re seeing comes by, but that' s the only reason. I will most likly be sitting there with my bow, waiting for the right time.
I think people really need to think about what being a true sportsman and conservationst is all about.
