This weekend I was pheasant hunting out on the plains here in Colorado. We had 12 guys in 2 trucks. You get the picture, 4-5 guys in the back of pick-ups with guns. So the game warden flags us down as we pass him and both trucks pull over and they check us to make sure our guns are unloaded, have plugs, and we have our licienses. No biggy, everyone is legal and ethical. When we got back into the back of the pickup we started to talk about wardens and the question was asked what would have happened if we had rufused to be searched. The wardens did ask before taking any guns from you hands if they could check it. It wasn' t a, give me your gun so I can check it, or anything like that. The concensous was that they would seize your gun from you, but I really don' t have a clue. Anyone?

I have met Game wardens from West Virginia, Ohio, and Maryland and they all pretty much say the same things. They can go pretty much anywhere they want as long as you have land and water. No warant is needed. But as far as I am concerned they can check as often as they like. I know I wouldnt want their job. Just think about it, Even a cop dont face as many guns as a warden does. So if he is a little cranky, give him a break. He is probably trying to swallow his heart back down from the last gun he saw lol.

In MN, wardens have alot of leeway in how they do their enforcement. They can go onto ANY property at anytime to enforce/or just check hunters/fisherman/etc. Tough job for sure. i know I wouldn' t want it. We have a warden in our area that confronted a group of folks that were illegally netting walleyes in the 1980' s. They weren' t to happy with him showing up when he did, so they tied the warden up to a tree and pushed a walleye up his butt. Can' t imagine the pain, but am sure it was worse when coming out if you know what a walleye looks like. They eventually nabbed the guys and they did some jail time. The warden is a great guy, does a good job....but is quite a standing joke around here. steve
