The New American Sportsman
Has anyone seen this show? It is typically shown on Espn Monday nights 9 p.m. Central time.
I happend to see the intro, so I thought I would check it out. Once it started I forced myself to watch the rest so that I could effectively complain today.
Problems with the show.
1. It is hosted by one of the most arrogant idiots to ever play sports, Deion Sanders. I will agree that he is a very talented athlete but there is nothing else about him (except that he is rich) that would qualify him as a good host or embassador to our sporting world.
2. They only had big time sports athletes on the show. Each (except for Adam Vilatarri who seemed to be an actual outdoorsman at heart) seemed completely out of place hunting and fishing.
3. About half of the show was interviewing each athlete and the highlights of their careers.
4. The guides did all the work. ALL of it. Including casting a fishing pole for Neil Smith so he could catch a tarpon when he couldn' t get the bait anywhere near the target area. Once Deion had a fish on and it was obvious that he had no clue on how to fight a fish.
5. The deer/javalina hunt in south texas had the guide driving his ford truck around with a platform on top while the famous baseball (can' t remember who)player rode up there with an uncased, loaded gun all while wearing camo. He could have been wearing his uniform for all that it mattered. When the guide would see an animal he would stop the truck so Joe Baseball could fire away. he took 5 shots at a moving javelina, behind brush and cactus through his carbon barelled gun without coming even close the confused animal. Finally after several attempts and possibly wounded animals they found a javelina that stood still in the middle of the " sendero" at about 70 yards and the guy dropped him. I know that this practice may be legal in Texas but it is very far from fair chase, and even farther from hunting. The only other people besides texans that I know of that do this are the Native Americans in northern MN. Driving around with men holding loaded guns on top of a 4x4 absolutely is not hunting and should not be shown on TV as such. Legal or not it makes real hunting and hunters look very bad and give more ammo to the anti' s and worse it can sway the neutrals. They might as well show Michael Irving snorting some coke and clubbing baby harp seals. Now that' s a show Neon might be qualified to host. Sorry to offend any of you Cowboy fans, but lets face it Deion hosting a hunting show? No way. Jay Novecek' s expensive guided hunts I can handle, but this is too much.
I encourage you to all watch this show once. Then write in to espn to complain. They are making our sport look terrible. We don' t want the show canceled but we do want the format changed to improve the image of the " New American Sportsman" someone who buys his/her license and attempts to harvest game animals in an fair chase manner.

I believe I saw the first couple min. of the first show and that was all I could handle. I guess watching Curt Gowdy do the show in the sixties spoiled me, and got my expectations up. Also used to love to watch Gaddabout Gaddis The Flying Fisherman. Now they were real outdoor sportsman shows.

I watch it every week. I find it pretty interesting though. Some of the people they have on there are real outdoorsmen. Last week they had Jeff Kent hunting whitetail on his South Texas Ranch. That guy has got it made. He plays baseball for a living, then in the offseason he manages this huge ranch and his deer heard. Plus he is an avid bowhunter. Pretty cool to see that some big stars do some things similar to us regular joes.
If I do have one major complaint about the show is Deion. I hate that guy. And the word hate is not too strong. He just ticks me off. It was better last year when Rick Schroeder was the host.
Ok my last thing. When people who are not necessarilly into the outdoors and hunting sports see a pro athlete or an entertainer going out in the woods or fishing, it brings more exposure to our sport. They may not see it as such a bad thing because hey Jarod Washburn is a hunter, and yet he is a pro athlete and is always in the spotlight. It just gives our sport another prevelent voice, which most of us don' t have. But I still HATE Deion.
Thanx,
Schemy
