RE: Build your own stand
I always build my own stands. Yeaqrs ago I would build my ladder stands out of treated wood but I now build all my ladder and tower stands out of metal. I mostly use 1" square for my ladder stands and put a treated plywood floor and swivel seat in them. I build my tower stands out of angle iron with treated plywood sides, floor and roof. I like to look in a catalog for ideas and then build them to my own specs and likes. -- CDH

my husband makes mine too...they are light weight, only 6-7 feet high.....deathly afraid of heights......he makes them out of that conduent stuff, helps having a welder in the family

RE: Build your own stand
Huntnma, if I built mine out of conduit, I would never make it up the ladder! (I' m a big guy. lol) I have seen some build like you are talking about and they are nice. Some of my welds used to look like chewed bubble gum but after a while and a book later, I can make pretty decent welds now. I used to have a few welds break in the beginning so I wouldn' t weld anything at first that supported anyone until I got better. I do have to admit, if my welds will support me, they will support the majority of everyone else. lol -- CDH

You can buy a quality, well made metal ladder stand that is lighter, easier to move, will last longer and is safer for a little more than you will have in a wooden stand.

CarolinaDeerHunter.....the husband has been doing it for years , the weldng thing, so i trust his work...or else my big butt wouldn' t be up there...my friend wieghs like 245lbs and if it doesn' t buckle with him in it,.i know i' ll be safe....the only thing i don' t like is the plywood seat, makes it a lil heavy, but it' s alot better than the metal mesh looking stuff he made on my first one.....he' s still learning to perfect them, i' m just happy i get to have his practice stands
