RE: shotgun hunting
Spine shot a deer with a slug a long time ago (only shot I had), we put a round of ssg into the back of the head and not one pellet came out also no visible damage. If ssg is not legal where you are then cut the throat (not the easiest thing to do when its trying to gore you or kick you) OR shoot it in the neck and be done with it ( " it won' t be pretty" ....... DEAL WITH IT )

Sounds to me that several of you are taking some pretty serious risks cutting throats. Definetly not a recommend procedure especially with a buck. Too easy to get gored[:' (] I think the heart shot would be the quickest and least damaging with a slug.

A deer shouldn' t have to suffer unnecessarily. A finishing shot to the heart or the back of the head will quickly end any suffering and shouldn' t be postponed to save some meat.

Nothing puts a suffering deer out of it' s misery faster than a shot to the brain. Of course, only do this if you are up close and if it' s a deer you won' t want to have mounted. Otherwise, put one right in the heart to finish it. Cutting the throat is not really a safe way to do it, and you do NOT want to risk injury to yourself no matter what the circumstance.
