Not to sound like a smart a$$ ... but in my view the answer is the one that groups the best out of your set-up. Any of the factory loaded 12 ga. slug-gun loads will kill deer cleanoy out to 125+ yards. The trick is finding one that will group great and then understandiong the arc of the round. These slugs are relatively slow moving, poor flying, heavy projectiles that lose a lot of energy quickly. The arc is substantial. Once you have found a good grouping round, I suggest you zero at 100 yards and check it at 50-75-125 and 150.

I shoot a 870 with a slug barrel. I found that faster slugs didn't group well (like the Hornady SST's) and slugs with a bit lower muzzle velocity grouped better. Ended up using Copper Solids. But, that's my gun -- yours may be different. I've also found that backing off on the amount of powder I use in my muzzleloader improved accuracy. So keep this in mind if you are using something faster and getting poor results.

copper solids are a solid choice and i have found they preformed well out of every gun my brother and i have tried them in.
as far as being poor flying.. well yes slugs can be and in the old days pretty much all of them were but not with the technology we have now. when we group 3 slugs on a 2 inch group at 200 yards i do not concider that poor flying.

Slugs go in a smooth bore barrel.
You want sabots like this,

Remington Accutips are my choice. I've shot them out of the Mossberg 500 (as well as teh Remington 870) and really like how they fly. I think the accutip really helps flight and keeps them shooting very flat. They are a little pricey but once you are sighted in you'll be all set. My thought is if that buck of a lifetime walks out, A couple dollars on a slug will be well worth it!
