2009 gun season 8pt buck

Nice buck and congrats. I would be proud of that deer too. The 3 1/2 year old part doesn't add up to me since it is a NY deer, weighs 120-130 pounds and doesn't have much diameter base on the antlers. If that deer came from upstate in the east I would say probably 2 1/2. If it came from western areas like Steuben Cty I would say a real healthy 1 1/2. Here in Vermont a yearling deer would weigh in about 120 but usually not have the 8 points. A 2 1/2 year old could have the eight and weigh around 160. A 3 1/2 year old usually will be 180 pounds plus and have a pretty heavy wide rack. If the deer came from lower New York then I can't say it isn't a 3 1/2 since I don't have any experience with them from there. Then again if a biologist said 3 1/2 then he must have had a pretty good clue such as tooth wear and historical measurements on antler diameter for the area. All that aside....Damn nice buck.

I would also agree that the buck is more than likely a 1 1/2 year old buck.
Based on the sleek and slender look of it's body and especially it's face.... that is most certainly NOT a mature developed skull by any strecth of the imagination!!! Also, look at the chest/brisket area.... it hasnt even begun to develop the mature "edge" or angle yet, it's still a smooth, rounded taper that you'll never see on a developed skeletal frame of a matrue buck.
Not trying to be disrespectful of the yound kids deer, only trying to prevent him fromlooking foolish while repeating the story and age of this deer.
CONGRATS on a fine buck by the way!

I am judging the age of a deer like that based on what I see in Indiana as I said. A deer with little antler mass and small basket rack stature is 99% of the time a 1.5 year old in Indiana as I said. Also, the weight of a semi mature deer (2.5 or older) in Indiana (as I said) will 99% of the time weigh at least 150 lbs. Also Indiana bucks that have a "doeish" face tend to be 1.5 year old. The buck in this thread has a three of these characteristics. So regardless of what some biologist has to say, my opinion will still stand that this is a 1.5yr old deer.

I worked a check station in college back in NH one year. I suppose folks thought we were biologists too. Some classmates knew just about nothing about deer, but they "aged" quite a few deer that were brought in by examining the lower jaw. I can honestly say there was some bad info given. So it does not surprise me in the least that this deer was estimated to be 3.5. I'd guess 1.5 based on body size and antler diameter. Perhaps 2.5 if deer densities are too high in that area of NY.
