I agree 100%. I was never pressed to hunt but i was always enjoyed it so i ventured out on my own. My first Deer was a doe, 2nd deer was a younger buck with a decent rack that could have been hanging around for another year or two but after i shot that deer i didnt hear any greif about it. It was all congrats from everybody. Yet thay did eventually tell me you know that deer could have stayed for a little longer and explained why which i learned from. When i look back on this I respect the reaction i got from killing that deer instead of them bashing me for it and leaving me wondering if i should shoot the next deer i saw. It makes me strive to kill a bigger more mature deer. It makes me think about the situation from a managment point of view instead of killing the first deer i see. You dont have to bash them. Any deer is a good kill for a kid, i believe you should always support theyre decision to be out in the woods hunting. If they shoot the wrong deer you can still support them in a positive way and still let them know what they did wrong. It tought me how to be a better hunter.

Do not trash us young guys to the field about the shots we take or the deer we take. For a first deer, a buck, PERIOD, is a trophy. And trust me, we won't take any absurdly stupid shots just cuz a deer is running across the field and our gun is cold. Ethics before Antlers is my hunting motto. That is all.

Get a grip guys. Deer hunting is about way more than killing deer. Any legal deer is a good deer. If a person harvest a deer within the leagal confines then who are we to say it is wrong. I may choose to only hunt "trophy Bucks" but that is my choice. If I choose to harvest a doe or spike and it is legal to do so, than that is my choice as well. The deal here, to me. is ethical. It is all about the hunt. Clean kill, and the preparation. We need to preach proper hunting ethics and sportsmanship. Nothing else.

Thumbs down Criticizing the wrong hunters

Perhaps we should stop criticizing young hunters, who probably come into the game very cautiously & carefully and concentrate on the big shots who think they know everything. Check this article out: http://www.skunkpost.com/news.sp?newsId=1001, I have a feeling you'll agree after reading it.

Thank you, and I don't disagree with him either. I have no problems with his basic position. I shot a spike just the other day simply because the shot was a gimmee and the steaks would be good and tender.

I agree with Jlsherr. Along with proper hunting ethics and sportsmanship, I believe we should preach Quality Deer Managment. Learn what deer to shoot and why. This will overall produce a more quality deer herd which will provide better hunting in the future.

Great post. Shootin any deer as a beginner is a trophy. My first deer was a button and I was D**m proud and so was my Dad and Uncle. Made me feel like I was part of the gang. You learn and move on and some decide whether they want to hold out for big ones or take the first deer that comes by. You spent the money on the license you have the choice to shoot what you want.
