IMO it's harder but not impossible to kill a mature buck when hunting on the ground but it can be done. I've been dress in full camo and actually had a little spike buck walk to within about 5 yards of me, trying figure out exactly what I was but an older deer would never do that.
Scent control and limited movement are key and always try to hunt into the wind. If the wind blows on your back, you'll be busted every time when hunting on the ground.
