RE: South Texas Deer
Thanks. My set up is as follows:
Canon EOS 5d (I wish, wish, wish I had an EOS 1Ds MkIII)
Canon 1.4 and 2X extenders which effectively double the range of your lens
Canon 600mm F4.0 Lens.
Giatto Tripod
Wimberly Mount.
I also had a Canon 70-200mm IS USM lens with me for the shorter stuff.
This was my first time to use the 600mm lens. I rented it. The lens costs about $8K to purchase. Rental was a couple hundred for 7 days. It's a monster. The whole thing, camera, lens and lens hood is as long as my arm from the shoulder to the tip of my finger. And it's heavy!!! But the pics the lens is capable of are really amazing. I have got a couple of them being framed right now in 24" x 18" size and I am really happy with them. And they make really cool desktops. I am in the process of finishing some desktops and I will post links to them when I am done for anyone interested.
The photography is just a hobby for me, but I could really get into the wild life stuff in a BIG way. It's actaully every bit as challenging as the hunting with a gun. Especially when you have deer all over you. You have to be very aware of the animals close to you, so you don't get busted snapping away. You are trying to move this great honkin' lens around, to take the get the best angle, making sure you don't get busted moving or snapping, or changing the enxtenders on the camera with the range changes. I got 3 hunts in at this ranch and wish I could have 30. The pics would be amazing.
Thanks to everyone who commented.
