lost all hope
i live in ny and a buddy of mine shot a little buck on tuesday in the fog and pouring rain.with a 243,he waited 10 mins, and went to find him,he took like 10 steps and up the hill came a huge buck we seen the day before.he got a 60 yrd shot in the chest, turn 180 and ran down hill, well long story short two of us looked for the big buck and the other guy looked for the little buck.after 3 hours we couldnt find either one. we did grids for two more hoursand finally found the little buck 4 to 500 yrds away, perfect shot right in the boiler maker with a pass throughand still went that far , we have been looking for the big one the last 3 days no sign, need some snow so we can look for the yote tracks they will find him..... dont no what else to do

How long did he wait to go after the big buck?
He waited 10 min. on the little buck but that's to soon. The little buck went 500 yards becouse he got pushed.
Did he shoot the big Buck off hand, that's a good ways off hand?

This scenerio is the exact reason that I am training my Lab pup to trail deer. She is 3 for 3, and I just got in from her third find. Her furthest trail so far has only been 200+/- yards, but she is also only 7 months old.
I would recommend trying to find someone in your area that has a dog that will trail and maybe even paying them something to help find the buck. Here is a link to a group in NY that specializes in finding deer.

well i dont think we pushed the bucks, i think the shot he made on the first deer was perfect,i think the 243 isnt the right gun for the wood we hunt, his shot was right in the boiler,as far as waiting how long can you wait when its pouring rainall day,and the deer are not bleeding enough to find any blood from the start.its not my first time hunting i know when to wait and when i got to get on the trail, and as far as a60 yrd free hand shot being far we shot at the range all the time. 60 yrd is a easy shot,in the open,

i have .250 sav ,almost same gun and not many bucks have run away after being hit with 87 gr bullet.
i would say it was bad shot and going after deer too soon, you will run into this.but you said it was good shot, then only thing left is you pushed deer to soon.

Im gonna have to back sproulman. However,Rains not gonna wash all the blood off from a well hit deer I dont care if its a hurricane outside. Yall pushed that deer or your buddy isnt as good of a shot as you think he is. I shoot a ruger 243, PLENTY big enough for deer, Its all in your shot placement babe.. Im not gonna say i would have taken a chest shot at a big buck that surprised me that kind of stuff is for amateurs!

Mickle44 is in New York, and I posted a link to a group up there that are "qualified" to track wounded deer.
