Depends on how you look at it? If you think thats considered a humane shot then thats you business. Im not saying it cant be done, just giving my opinion. Ive shot deer in the neck but they wernt big bucks. I wouldnt risk losing a nice deer by shooting him in the chest because there is less room for error there than a broadside shot. Im gonna say a chest shot on a nice buck is AMATEUR cause thats what i think. hunting is about patience, if you dont have the patience to wait for the a good clean shot then thats you, and you will be spending the time that you could have spent waiting on a good shot on finding your deer!

almost all those who did it hit the deer in neck but close to head.meat could not be wasted,so a lot took a neck shot and most did not miss as shots were close.
they all said the 87 gr bullet was best back then .
that gun did not come out with 100 gr until recently.
but anywhere other than that or behind shoulder is wasting meat and possibly a long day tracking a buck.
i also passed on many bucks because i did not have a good shot.
i know people who shoot deer in spines with rifle, they say they go right down, they are right but there goes back roast..
these are same people i see shoot pheasants at 10 yards with 12 ga with no.5 shot.
nothing but feathers.
unless a buck turns and i can get a behind shoulder shot, he walks.

hard to believe a perfect shot was made and the deer went 500 yds. But if you say so.
Ive shot them with much much smaller calibers in the boiler room and not one has gone 150 yds.
What kind of ammo or what bullet was he using ?

i seen where he shot the first deer it was right where it should be,as for the big buck i told you where he said he shot it i dont no where he shot it, just telling you what i seen i no where he hit the first deer, as i found it and was there when it was gutted. he said he made the same shot on other buck ,cant say for sure as i wasnt there,and i doknow when to shot and when not,as i said i seen the big buck the day before he shot,and let him walk as i couldnt get a good shot, as for bullet 130 i think not sure.....all i no is i have been looking every day this week ,so i dont no how good he hit it i think by now i should have found it, im thinking buck fever and hopeing he missed clean, can only hope,two more weeks hope he shows again or i find him, takes to long to grow them that big to waste them...

As for the original post, bullet placement may be in question plus I believe this deer was pushed waaay to soon. I usually don't let the weather be a factor in searching for a wounded deer. You can usually tell how the deer reacts after the shot. If the deer was hit hard, let him go, you'll probably find him dead within a few hundred yards. If there's a question on bullet placement, again, let him go. Most likely he will bed down and hopefully expire. IMHO, the most common reason for hunters not finding wounded deer is because they did not wait long enough and pushed that deer much further than he had to be.

I also use the old .250-3000 Model 99 that Dad used in the 50's. I use a 100 grcartridge and have shot deer that I have never had to trail. Bullet placement is vital no matter what the caliber.

i like the 87 gr speer better than 100 gr .
87 gr will put deer right down and 100 gr will let them run a little.
you would not think 13 grs means anything but it does, i have seen it over 47 years.
i also like the 90 gr speer in the .243
