What % of your deer were shot under 100 yards?
Just curious with everyone wanting the fastest flatest shooting rifle for long range hunting and yes I am one of them. What persentage of your deer were shot under 100 yards? I hunt with a 270 and I have a 300 Weatherby on the way but I still haven't taken a shot that my ole 30-30 couldn't have dropped the deer in its tracks.

RE: What % of your deer were shot under 100 yards?
During the season, overall, I'd say that about half my deer are 100yds or less. Those half would be the ones that I get with a muzzleloader or bow. During rifle season, I pull back out of the deer's living room and hunt the edge of a field to keep some of the pressure off of them. With a rifle, I don't think I've had a shot under 100yds since I've been hunting this area.

Probably about 60% for me. Ihave a couple stands on power line cuts, and I like knowing if he comes out 300 yds away that he is still in reach. I do practice out to 500 yds, and consider 350 yds my practical limit. Only takes one missed opportunity with a 30-30 to make you wish you had another 200 yds range.

I voted in the 1% - 24% category but that is for all deer including does. If it was for bucks only I would have voted in the 0% category as I've never shot a buck at under 100 yards.

Most of my stand set ups are for bowhunting so my average shot even with my rifle is less 30yards, last year my farthest shot was 80yards. However I have taken shots out over 400yards, but its extremely rare. I voted 75% to 99%

All of mine have been under 100 yards, but I have had some opportunities at longer distances. A big factor is where you hunt. I've hunted in wide open places and I've hunting up close and personal.

To answer this question it really depends on your weapon of choice. I have never had the opportinuty to hunt with a rifle and I have never owned a slug gun. All of my deer have been taken with a muzzleloader or a smoothbored shotgun. So every one of my deer have been within 50 yards at most.

95% of the animals I have taken have been under 100yds but I cheat, they were taken with archery equipment...
I do have a couple of long range flat shooting rifles but those are mainly just for fun and the occasional coyote adventure....I have started gun hunting again in the last 3 years with my oldest daughter and to be honest, every stand we hunt there is not a shot much over 100yds.....

My farthest was 80 yards, last year. 12 ga 870. I'm good to about 120 yards. Never shot at any animal that far though. Probably never have a reason to either.
As for rifle hunting. Anyplace I have been able to rifle hunt I've seen to many people to ever atempt anything over 100 yards. Most of it was covered by peopleanyway. It sucks but its the truth. Fortunatly here in Ohio I'm not seeing that where I hunt. Pluss if I want longer range I'll get out the muzzle loader.
