RE: hornady shells
I personaly shoot the Hornady SST 300g slugs in my "Little Slugger". I don't have the cash to try a ton of different brands, but I was tickled with how well the Hornady SST's perform. Not saying they are the best by no means, but I can account that they are some fine shooting rounds.

Personally I don't think there is a "best" shell for all rifles/guns. You need to test a few different brands to see how they group in your gun. What might group great for one person with their Rifle, may not shoot the same out of the same model gun.
Test them out and see, might want to also buy some other shells, and do a comparison.

No shotgun slug is the best overall, to have the best for you, one must test many different brands to see what your shotgun likes. My H&R 20ga. loves the Hornady SSTs, my Remington 11-87SPS loves the Lightfields and the Winchester Supreme Partion Golds (385gr.) which I currently use if I'm using the 12ga

Whoever told you that the ballistic tips were of the "exploding" variety has misinformed you, although it would be neat...

The ones your gun shoots best would be the best, try 4-5 different boxes and see. I have one rifled bblthat likes hornady slugs, and one that hates them. From 1.75" in one to 6"-8" at 100 yds in another gun, same slug. You have to see for yourself.
