I have friends in Alabama that hunt with the 300 ultra mag. I usea 300 win mag, and I'm really happy with it. I've taken everything from antelope to hogs, whitetail, mulies, and elk with it. The ballistics are great and ammo is everywhere for it. I always thought the recoil would be bad, but it isn't any worse than a 30-06.
If you like the 300 ultra mag, there's no reason why you shouldn't use it if it fits you.

I wonder how the various 300 mags compare to each other. A close friend has a 300 wsm and although he has used it for both elk and whitetail, he's very reluctant to practice with it because he says it's no fun to shoot. He decided it's just not worth the hassle for deer and uses a 3006 or 3030.
