Default Hey Okies - McAAP?

Anyone ever do the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant hunt? I got drawn this year for the crossbow hunt and would like to know if anyone's done it, what it's like, what quality animals they have, etc.

Can anyone tell me anything?

It's been years ago, but my dad did one of those hunts in McAlester and hated it. They dropped him off and truly did babysit him. Plus, he said the place had so many hunters that he could literally hear 20 different guys using calls, rattling etc..

I hope things have changed, but I will stick to private land.

Yeah, it maybe babysat, but its a bonus hunt (i.e.- Anything you kill out there does NOT count against your yearly tag limit), so I'm not too heartbroken about it if its not a dream hunt. It's free and if I kill a doe, I can come back each year until I get a buck, so I'm not really losing out on anything by going. I'll still be on private land later in the year, but I can't pass up a free hunt, you know?

Just curious if anyone's been lately.

Sounds exactly like the Radford army ammunition plant. If you are drawn for a chance to hunt($10.00 fee) you are only allowed to take a doe. If you are drawn again the next year then you are permitted to take a buck, but only if you are drawn for two consecutive years in a row. Lucky for me my mom has 180acrs joining the plant, lol. I have seen some very, very large deer while driving past the plant.

McAAP is an awesome place to hunt. Ya you cant use all the range finders and stuff, but at least you are going to get to use a crossbow, something that most people cant hunt with there (you have to use a long/recurve bow). There are some giants out there and you will probably see at least one big deer while down there. I would be excited if I were you, I think only like 50 buck permits are given out each season and they usually dont kill half that many (because of the long bow restriction). Good luck!

Huge Deer that have a chance to get really old because of the limited draw, methods of takings, and large area of land.
