Do you process your own deer or take it to a processor/butcher?

Default Do you process your own deer or take it to a processor/butcher?

Since finding a deer processor/butcher is getting more difficult in my area, I began to wonder, how many hunters process their own deer?

I grew up in a poor family where we truly did hunt for the meat. We hunted public land and tried to maximize the harvest on every hunting trip. We did not pass on very many animals. We butchered our own deer and rarely ate beef and then only hamburger. I ate my first beef steak when I was 18 yeas old.

I'm not poor any longer, and my hunting strategy has changed dramatically, but I still butcher all my own wild game, partly for the satisfaction of a job well done, and partly so I'm 100% guaranteed that the deer that I shot is the deer that I end up eating.

I've always done it myself -- quality control being a big thing.

Agreed, we do all our deer. It's all part of the fun to spend time with my family. I always say if it wouldn't be for deer season I would have lost touch with many of my cousins and uncles. But we always catch uo in the fall!

I take it somewhere, it's not feasible to do it myself because of where I live. I live in a trailer park and somehow I don't think it would go over well if I had a deer hanging in my carport.

Me and my buddies have de-boneing parties, but I always go to a meat packer for the processing. Cheaper after we de-bone itand they know what they are doing. Plus by the time I'd add all the equipment it wouldn't be worth it for me. Just don't know 100% positive if I get my deer back.
