If your off day is say a Tuesday and you can make it to the range all day and make sure your gun is ready to go for the season, you certainly will be profficient with your equipment. If the course is only offered on Saturday and Sunday within 2 hours of where you live, then you are in trouble. This is the case for my friend that is trying to take it, even though he isn't required to take it here in Illinois.
Also, I don't know who is married with kids (Luckily, I am not) but my buddy has to use up all of his favors with his wife to get away hunting for a few days. Telling her that he has to take a class for two days over an hour away and take off work would not go over well with her. Im not trying to start fights over this topic, but the course is being taught the same way it was 40 years ago. I just think it needs some changes for the technology we have today.

If one does not have the "time" to take the course, how will they ever have time to become profficient with their equipment and to hunt?

That was the one thing that disappointed me with the course....they talked about all of the weapons, but we didnt get to shoot bows or muzzleloaders and when we shot the other guns, they acted like we knew how they worked

RE: who all has tooken there hunter education course
I haven't ever "tooken"anything. But back in 1968 hunters safety was a required class at my junior high school as part of an outdoor ed class. I also had english just before the outdoor class so that I could correctly convey my questions ......otherwise it would have been obvious to all that I should have "taken" it.
In all I took hunters safety
1966
1968
1970
I liked outdoor ed.................
