My Dad's been there for me my whole life - but not so much as a hunting mentor - I got him into deer hunting more than he did me.
In fact, my Dad's a fair weather hunter, and deer don't excite him a whole lot (big or small). He's come to really like deer camp, and all of us getting together every year, but the "hunt" is another story, an hour long hunt for him is an excursion.
When I was younger, I could never understand his approach on deer hunting, and at times it would really bother me. Now, each year I look for the good things to share with him, even its not the "hunt" itself. For example, This year on opening day, I took probably my largest buck ever. Knowing that Dad was probably cold, and restless, I called him on the radio and asked him if he would come help me get the buck back to camp. He came over to help me, and he was very happy that I was happy, I mean he was reallyUP! Not so much about the deer,but because of what it meant alot to me.
I'll never forget how happy it made him to see me realize something that was truly important, and exciing to me. It wouldn't have mattered if it was a hunting, or some other event.
If you have a Dad - find something that you can share, it doesn't have to be a hunt.........you don't get these days back.
