Breaking in a Rifle
How many kills do you have to make with a particular gun/load before you consider it "broke in" or "proven"?
I have a "new to me" Sauer 202 in 270 wcf and made my fifth and sixth kills with it today and almost feel it is "broke in". I downed a long spike at noon and popped a feral cat tonight in my pasture.
I am new to reloading and am using 57 grs IMR 7828SSC, Federal GM210M primers, 150 gr Speer Hot Cor bullets, in PMC brass. This load groups an honest inch at 100 yards, and I am now considering the load "tried and true".
Here is my buck I killed a couple of weeks ago in OK with the rifle/load combo.

Sounds like you're doing everything right to me. I happen to like Varget, so I would be curious to see if that may be a little better. It may or not be.Varget is very temperature stable as well.Nice buck too!

As I said, I am new to reloading and am only loading for my 270 now, but I am in the process of setting up for my 22-250 and 308 as well. I would like to find a powder that I could use for more than one caliber, so that I can buy in bulk to save a little money.
Do you have any experience with Varget in any other calibers; namely 22-250 or 308?
Thanks for sharing!

RE: Breaking in a Rifle
I've shot plenty of Varget in .308. when I shot NRA Highpower. It was probably the choice of powder for the vast majority of shooters that I knew. Varget is an excellent powder for a medium capacity case, (.308 and 22-250). I shot the .308/Varget comboin an M1A so my loads probably won't be as hot as yours would be since you're shooting a bolt gun.
My brother-in-law shot a 22-250 and he used Varget for it as well. I'm not sure exactly what load he used but it was definitely Varget and it shot extremely well. I do know that he ran it hot though.
I would try it in the 270 as well. I shot in my M1 Garand (30-06) and it performed just as good in it, as it did in the .308. The 30-06 and the 270 aren't that far apart as far as case capacity is concerned. Just follow the basic rulesof reloading as you probably know already, start low and work up.I'm more than confident that you'll be pleased with a load in the 41-43 grain range for your .308. Good luck! Simp

Nice buck! Great mass!
I've never used Varget powder at all, so I don't knowabout it. I've had a lot of luck with IMR 4064 in 22-250...and you can use that powder in 308 too with all the way up to 168 gr bullets
