RE: best satellite imagery web site
I always use this one http://www.flashearth.com/
Better yet, you don't have to download it like Google Earth.

Most of them use the same satelitte imagery so if your property is a few years old on one it probably will be on the others as well. I've seen a few instances where they use different imagery though so you might check around. I'm pretty sure mapquest and google use 2 different images.
I like google earth because the ruler feature is pretty useful. You can measure in feet, yards, miles, in a straight line or even a crooked path.

I can tell you that the Microsoft VE option on Flash Earth has images that are less than6-1/2 months old....judging by construction sites of ours that I've looked at. The Terra Server one that I looked at last, was only as recent as 2001, by looking at my subdivision.
Good call on the FlashEarth...

What part of the country are you located? I work with maps and aerial images from all over the world. If you tell me a rough location, I can give you the best options. Here in NY state we are lucky. The state has a GIS clearinghouse that has topos and aerial photos for free download. Some are extremely detailed.

I think it varies based on the last time your area was imaged. Looking at the Flash Earth site there are 3 different images of my land. Google Earth as the most detailed image, Yahoo is the same as Mapquest which is a different image but not quite as detailed as Google, and the Microsoft VE is at least3 years old in my area and is the least detailed of the three choices. All 3 are current within 5 years based on the construction around my house.
The flash site is nice to be able to compare the choices in your area though.

Just so you know, when you view a site off of flash earth be sure to zoom in on each one of site. IE I was looking at the Yahoo! Maps in those option for my area because I thought it was the only best quality available. Until I zoom in on each site and found that Microsoft VE has more zoom in and clearier quality for my area. Hope it will help some.

I use google earth and then paid the $20 yearly fee to upgrade to the PLUS version. Now I can upload/download my waypoints, tracks, etc from my GPS and view them on the satellite map.
I also like how google earth will allow you to change your perspective. Instead of always looking straight down, you can rotate your view in order to better see elevation changes.
