RE: longest shot
I don't understand why anyone would shoot a buck at over 250 yards unless it hard run and you knew what you were shooting or had maybe scouted enough to know exactly what deer you were attempting to hit (and even then, I don't know how you could be sure unless there was something very unique).
That all said, I've shot at pigs from up to 800 yardsa and aoudads from similar distances. Longest shot I've ever made was about 600 yards (used googleEarth to range the shot) and that was on a pig with a .300 Weatherby Mag.
I did witness a guy bring down a large aoudad ram from about 1500 yards. Most amazing thing I've ever seen. I could barely make out the animal going up the side of a cliff with my binoculars. I have no idea what kind of rifle he had, but he set up on the hood of a truck, pulled the trigger, we waited for what seemed like 30 seconds, then I watched the ram fall down the cliff. The guy was an old vet who lives in the mountains somewhere between Aspen and Crested Butte and hunts for all his food. Interesting guy, but the most amazing shot I've ever seen.
