Fact: the older, mature bucks start BEFORE the younger deer. They start making rubs and scrapes earlier, running does earlier and mating earlier. Older bucks become older because they do the majority of their travel at night---that's why you see more young bucks.

If it is just the beginning of the chase period, the bigger bucks are probably still doing the majority of their activity at night, give them some time and you'll see them during the daylight hours. Also think of it lke this, a 1.5 year old buck (as im sure is the age of the young bucks you are referring to) is lke a 13 year old boy who just hit puberty. He hormones are flying high for the first time in his life and each and every doe he comes in contact with he believes he has a chance with, just like the teenager, he hits on every doe comes across. Now a mature buck is
more lke a gentleman, he knows how to treat hte ladies, he has more experience. Since he has been through the rut before he knows the ins and outs of the process a little bit better. For example there are two does: Sally and Daisy, and the big buck scent checks them both the same day. He can tell that Sally is roughly only TWO days from coming into heat, and that gets him pumped up, while he finds that Daisy is a week or so away. So he'll focus the majority of his attention to Sally knowing that shes just about to peak in her estrous cycle, before moving on to the other does that are closer to coming into heat. Basically the younger bucks do chase a little bit before mature bcusk, simply because they are inexperienced, and go about their business the wrong way. While that shooter buck knows how to treat a lady! I hope this analogy helped, because if it didn't, i just spent a lot of time for nothing haha.. Best of Luck and HAPPY HUNTING!!

Does know where the big bucks are......Studies have found thatlots ofdoes actually go to the dominate bucks which is why alot of the big bucks take their time comingfrom the high country......
If you see lots of does and small bucks chasing them, chances are high that a dominate buck is somewhere close by cause thats pretty much what is keeping those does around......
They're in heat...All swoolen and bleeding........
DOES ASRE WANTING ACTION MORE SO THAN THE BUCKS......

I did a paper on this very subject before I graduated college. I personally did no research , but gathered information from several other biologists. A copy of my work can be seen at the UA Library. PM me, if you're interested.
I had the same assumption as the person who started this thread. When one of my professors mentioned in passing that the big bucks start before the immature deer, I was confused and started looking into it. That was the inspiration for my thesis.
Put a game camera at a well known scent tree in your area next year in early Sept. That will prove it to you better than any paper. You'll see mature bucks and does using it about 2-3 weeks before MOST immature deer do.

One thing to add to this discussion is that many mature bucks will remain IN cover for safety. The younger guys possiblyhaven't developed the cover = safety sense yet.
And as someone mentioned earlier nocturnalism also adds to this. Big boys have learned that there is less hunting pressure/predators in deeper cover, and come out of it later in the evening when predators are less numerous. If the younger boys survivea season or twothey will start to gain the intelligence to gauge hunting pressure, and how cover equates to safety.

I disagree with you. Deer are aliens who are studying people. What you see as the Rut is simply an annual experiment the aliens do, and they have found out that humans get a little wild during the last weeks of october and first weeks of november. The aliens choose to have their lives taken, all for the sake of their experiments on the human race. Look at all of you. HA! You think you know the truth. The truth is out there. Turn your eyes to the sky and keep watching for the alien ships to appear and herd us all into their ships with their sharp antler-like prodding sticks that grow out of their heads. KEEP WATCHING! WE ARE NOT ALONE!

Definately! The young guys are always out screwing around harrasing doe's,making scrapes feeling there oats a little early in pre rut then the big guys. But then again there's alot more young bucks then older biggerbucks around!
