Thick, thick, thick

RE: Thick, thick, thick
Decided to give him a rest after hunting him last weekend so I moved a couple of miles away. Had some success this morning. Mid sized 4x4 with a small uniform rack. Will be some nice freezer food. Going to set up on the big boy tomorrow morning. Still have 2 tags left so maybe I'll be able to contribute some more inches to team six.

Just me, but I'll have a buddy with me that still has both his tags and I still have my second deer tag so we will be party hunting tomorrow (we're meat hunters first and sincewe bothhavested big does during bow, each a small buck during MLand today me the buck he offered the rack if I drop the big buck on his tag...now that's a good hunting buddy). Where abouts in the interlake are you from? Been doing most of my hunting this year north of Fisher Branch but I hear that they are really running around the Chatfield area (too bad I didn't scout that area this year). On my way home today, (about 3 this afternoon), a huge 5x5 (easy 160 typical), crossed the road at the "s" curve just south of Poplarfield. I saw the big buck that I described in the first post of this thread 3 times during ML season last year but not during rifle. I saw him for the first time during bow season so I decided to stay on him. I usually use a 7 mm mag or my .270during rifle seasonbut since he's in so deep I decided to keep using my ML for the 7mm would be useless in the deep thick stuff.Nothing like hunting the interlake area of our province eh? Hope you have a successful deer season.

Well, I’m nearly finished my season. Got a big 5 x 6 on Thursday. Had him scored today and he’s in the 150 class. He came within 60 yards from me and one shot with my 7mm-08 did the trick. I have the doe tag but I’m going to wait a little while. I’ve hunted the Chatfield area for a number of years and I know what “s” corner you mentioned. I also know the Fisher Branch, Broad Valley area. Did some hunting in that area also. I live in the Fraserwood area. Interlake has some big country and I love it. I’m going to post my buck when my brother comes back from his trip, He took all the pictures and he’s gone down south for 10 days. Good luck with your hunt...

Good luck, whitetaildreamer, the diversion from hunting the big buck was probably a good idea, since that way you could give him a time to settle down if he happened to be rattled at all by you being in his core area, or if by some crazy chance the moose encounter scared him off awhile.

Only on the perfect wind...but since he answered your doe bleat and your in his domain I'd be tempted to give him a go with rattling. Have your partner set up just behind or to the rear wing side (s)on another likely travel route he may use to try and circle the noise makers. Start off lightly if your not sure where his bedroom isand if no response vamp up slowly. It may just entice him enough for a look..look! If that's not for you, I would certainly move closer to his bedroom with again the perfect wind. Just use caution if uncertain to where he likes to hang his head and you should be fine. I personally move as close as possible to the bedding areas as season moves into the rutting stages and have enjoyed both risk and reward by doing so but it has been a good way to up my chances onmature whitetails. I am chasing a 6x5 in the ML/Bow Zone near s'toon, waiting for the rut to kick in high gear coupled with the right wind to sneak in tightand hopefully get a chance to flick the safety off.
Best of Luck.
Congrats, Trailer on your buck. What bullet did you use this year in the 7mm 08??

Skeeter, my cousin is from the "toon" also and has seen some biguns this year but has yet to put the hammer down. Best of luck on your quest. Thanks for the advice, I was thinking of setting up for rattling also. May give it a try tomorrow. I'm thinking of starting with a doe bleat/pushed off fawn bawling sequence followed by some rattling 30-40 yards farther downwind. We'll start off as close as I think safe to his bedding area (pretty darn sure I know where it is), and then work in towards him. I'll let you know when I get back (this area has Sunday hunting also so I've got a couple of days to give it a wack). Congrats trailer! Quick question trailer...Are you going to the "Big Buck" socialin Poplarfied this year? It would be a great place to see your big buck. Let me know. Also there is a buck night in Gunton the Sat. after hunting season ends. There's usually some real nice racks there plusthe last couple of years they have had agreat silent auction which included a couple of nice rifles. Give it a thought.

Whitetaildreamer, thanks for the info but I usually stay away from social events.
Skeeter, I decided to try the 140 gr. Fusion this year. Worked very well , but I wouldn’t say that 60 yards is a true test...
Thanks guys. I’ll post the whole story when I get the pictures. You know how it goes, the post is no good without pictures...

RE: Thick, thick, thick
The story finally ends. I attempted to use the rattling calling sequence that I stated in an earlier post and it did have some success. The big buck did circle me and end up coming into my hunting buddy. How close? Well let's say about 10 yards. He lifted his gun and all he saw in the scope was nose. He apologized to me latter for when the monster came in he pulled an Elvis. I mean he stated that both his legs just started to shake and before he was able to focus again the buck was gone. From this experience I knew exactly where to place my stand for the last weekend. I was in the bush 3 hours before shooting time on the last weekend screwing in my tree pegs for my stand when he came through. I had 3 pegs in the tree and my gun was a few feet from me when he crashed through the bush swamp not more than 15 yards from me. He was a long bodied 4x4 with short 6-7 inch tines, with a spread of at least 24 ins. and the mass of the main beam was thicker than my fore arm. I didn't have a shot and nore did any one else so I know that hewill be in that thick bush waiting for me nest year. I learnt alot from chasing this buck and I hope to apply it for next season. I guess that's one of the coolest things about dear season is that you will now have an entire year to plan an ambush for the following season. He'll be there again next year and so will I, filled with the knowledge that he taught me, willing and able to adjust my tactics for next season in order to harvest that great Canadian brute. I love hunting whitetails!!!!
