In many places bow season and small game season overlap. I am hunting rabbits and squirrel in the morning tomorrow and deer in the afternoon with my bow. Could it be they were shooting at a few squirrels?

Possibly Pheasant or waterfowl?

The shots that worry me are the rifle shots.

Here in WV it's bow season and squirrel season. I've been hearing some close shotgun blasts also but most likely it's someone who doesn't bow hunt going after a few tree rats

Yes indeed seasons do overlap. AND someone very well could just be doing some target practice.

Don't jump the gun just yet. Use it to your advantage. If you feel the gunshots could rattle or scare the deer - keep an eye out that way.

It's squirrel season here in Indiana too, though I suspect that those slug guns I hear going off aren't pasting squirrels. It's also very possible that what you're hearing is gun hunters sighting in for the upcoming firearms season. The firearm turkey season just ended a few days ago as well.

I've got a lot more things to do than make a call to the authorities about gunshots elsewhere during a time of the year when other types of gun hunters have the legal right to be out and about too. I think that the guy you called probably cut you some slack with his response. Mine would have been a lot more blunt. Think it thru

I checked the zero on my slug gun on Tuesday. No poaching involved. You can't say for sure any harm was being done.

Sorry, but I agree. Could be anything. Guy could be sighting his gun in for deer season if he's on his own property, to boot.

Here in WI, there's currently Ruffed and Sharp-Tail grouse, Quail, Partridge, Pheasant, Woodcock, Crow, Fall Turkey, Dove, Duck, Late Season Goose, Racoon, Gray Squirrel, Fox Squirrel, Jack Rabbit, Cottontail Rabbit, Coyote, Fox, Mink, Muskrat, Otter, Opossum, Snowshoe Hare, Bobcat, Fisher, Weasel, and if you're so inclined....skunk.

Those areall open for firearms as of this moment....
