Great buck! Thanks for sharing. I remember seeing a dark colored deer, and it was a very nice buck, the afternoon before firearms season started in Crawford County, Missouri in the mid 70s. AS far as I know, no one ever took that buck. The story provides an explanation for what we saw that day.

I didn't mean to confuse you guys, but just to let you know, it was not me that shot that buck. I just thought it was a good article and I wanted to share it. Sorry for any confusion.

it is referred to as a MELANISTIC deer. It's caused by an overprodution of the skin pigment melanin. It is a rarer occurence than albinism.

Awesome trophy! Congrats to the lucky young man that bagged it!
Speaking of melanism, I once shot a groundhog that had it, and didn't even have a clue as to what it was. I showed it to some of the neighbors, and they agreed that it was truly a unique animal, but everyone thought it got into a vein of coal and it stained it's fur. It wasn't until many years later that I read an article on this rare form of genetic mutation that I realized the trophy I had bagged. Wish I would have skinned it out and tanned the hide, or better yet taken some photos.

RE: A BLACK BUCK!!!!! Check this out !!!!!
My dad shot a buck in MN about 1980 that was nearly as dark. We had a gray tabby cat at that time that was the same hue. I always wanted to see another deer with similar coloring because it was both unusual and beautiful. The article was great in explaining the phenomenon and tellig me why I have probably not seen another since.
