RE: Am I going nuts???
As many people on here have said...things change. I hope, no matter what, you do not lose your love of the outdoors whatever you carry in your hand. Taking a kid seems to be the "a" answer and I'm sure that will work. Ialso like your idea of a "change inscenary" and might suggest that if you have the means available, you also try to hunt forsomething you've never done before in a landscape you've never seen (orrarely seen) before. Perhaps sometimes it's just the repetition that gets old. take care.

Hey Doug,
Since you have been hunting a long time and have a wealth of experience to share you might try mentoring a new hunter or kid.
It is possible that there are kids in your areathat want to hunt that do not have family to show them or can not afford to have the kid hunt.
I'm not sure where or how to find these kids but possibly some folks here on the forum have some suggections.

RE: Am I going nuts???
Why do you hunt in the first place?
I hunt because I like being outside, I need the exercise, and I love the meat. I don't take it any more serious than that. This is aside from the feeling of accomplishment when I harvest an animal. You've probablybecome numb to that feeling after numerous kills. Like the others have said, mentoring a kid or a newer hunter might restore that enthusiasm.

Anyone ever loose the urge to Hunt?
Does it come back?
The last 5-6 years my desire to Deer hunt (or anything else) has been dwindling, last year I went and passed on all but one deer(doe for meat). I can honestly say that after 35 years, I don't care if I kill another deer, the bigger the rack the less interested I am in shooting, I just like to walk the woods and watch. Went out last night and had 4 within bow range, how proud that smallish buck looked as he paraded around with his 3 does, I would not have felt right shooting any of them.
I think I need therapy, I've used Traditional bows and compunds, shotguns from muzzeloading to semi auto with roundballs, buckshot and slugs, rifles from 44-40 Winchesters to scoped .270's with many inbetween, muzzel loaders from flintlocks and Civil War rifles to an inline. Stand hunted, hunted on drives, still hunting/spot and stalk, hunted one particular deer all season and wacked a pickup full on a depravation permit, Horn hunted, meat hunted.....Big, small and numerous Deer...
Any hope for me? I still love to walk the woods, especially when there is snow. I'm thinking about a change in scenery...Ideas???

If that doesn't work take some kids out and show them how to hunt.
The safe way.
I didn't have any one to show me how to hunt.
I wish I did.
Good Luck

RE: Am I going nuts???
I to think you should take a young kid out hunting . Talk to a group like big brother see if there's a kid who would like to hunt teach him to hunt -fish . Teach him the respeat of handleing guns.Mybe take a hunter safty coures togather. Teach him to enjoy the out doors and to always respeat the animale he's hunting .If you don't want to do that buy a camcorder and film the deer in the wild then some night when you have time watch what you re-cored, enjoy the deer in the wild ,thats what i plan on doing some day when hunting deer with a weapen doesn't satisfy me any more. Good luck to you in what ever you decide to do .

RE: Am I going nuts???
Wow, thanks for the replies...I was not sure of the responce I would get when I first posted this but it would be my pleasure to share the woods with any of you guys.
The camera idea is a good one but I'm also a gun nut and really like to carry one around in the woods, maybe for bow season, my wife has a fancy digital SLR.
Those that said take a kid hunting have struck the biggest cord with me. I have two growndaughters and no other real family, most of my friends are my age so their kids are also grown. It's a little late this year to find someone to mentor but I'm going to keep my nose to the wind for next year. Maybe take the camera along to get some pics of that. I did get a neighbor started in muzzel loading some years ago and it was very rewarding.
I started this post last night but was interupted by a phone call from my good buddy John. I have finally got him to take up BPCR shooting, he showed up at my house a couple months ago with an Uberti 1876 Winchesterin 45-60. I spent alot of time tweeking the gun for him and also showing him how to make and load the shells. He called to say thanks and that he had shot a real nice Hog with it. Just listening to his description of the hunt gave me that warm fuzzy feeling if you know what I mean.
Any ideas where I can find a willing kid?...LOL
Thanks again
Doug

RE: Am I going nuts???
I don't have the urge to shoot everything I could anymore either. Elk season this year is a good example. I did get my elk about 15 days into season, but I could have been done opening day or about 10 different days after that. I was kind of horn hunting, but if I had held to my standard I would still be in the woods. I'm happy with what I got, and more importantly we are eating good. Last night we had maple pepper bacon wrapped back strap medallions...mmmm!
Photography sounds like a good suggestion. Perhaps you would be interested in hunting a different species other than deer? Try antelope hunting for example. The meat is excellent, and you will probably see different terrain and use new hunting styles. It may be the ticket to fire you up again. I mean, it does seem like you want that or you wouldn't have posted.
