Default 80 pounds of boneless meat=? pounds live weight???

What is the percentage of boneless meat to live weight? Help with this would be greatly appreciated. I have heard that the boneless meat yield is somewhere around 35-40% of the live weight. Is this true???

SB.
I will give you what I read in sports and field but I now think it depends on your butcher as what % you get back. I just got mine back and feel that more than a few steaks are missing.
Live wt = ___________
Field dress = 78 to 79% of live wt
Boneless wt = 58% of field dress wt
Now in talking with others I feel that the boneless wt is more like 35 to 40% depending on how much damage your shot caused.
I guessed on the wt of the guts, heart ect. and the wt of the hide and legs that I cut off and the wt of the head and antlers and came up with around 90 to 100 lbs.
Hope it helps
Rick

I butcher my own,so I will take a little more time than the commerical shops will when deboning it..that being said,I fugure about 45 to 55 % of live weight is useable meat.
80 pounds of eatable meat means 150 to 165 lbs. live weight.
give or take a few lbs.
it all depends on if the shot was through the ribs and didn't mess up anything except a couple of ribs.

I usually put it all in hamberger except the back strap and loins,(they are for frying)when I package the burger,it is in one lb. packages.so that way I can tell what I have.

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

I just shot a nice little 8 pointer that was 200lbs live & I ended up with 75lbs of boneless meat after throwing about 5-10lbs that was bad from the shot.
