Thanks for the replies guys. Like I said, I'm new to trail camming, so I appreciate your input.

Yeah, I would love to watch this guy grow up. If he's only 2 or 3 now, by 4 to 5 years old, I would assume he'd have a nicerack on his head. Problem is, I don't own the property and there are some unethical hunters that are also on this property and they take pretty much anything that walks in front of them. They'll let the does walk, but take spikes and fours and sixes that might end up as trophies one day. I don't understand.

I have several other pictures from the same cam of four to five spikes and fours that are nice sized deer with healthy mains already. But I worry they'll get taken by these a**es that are also out there. It would be nice to track the growth of one or two bucks for a few years.

Well if you have unethical hunters around i would take that buck if he was under my stand...I know how it is to have people like that around and sometimes that will be a trophy buck in that area because other hunters are taking all the bucks out before they have time to mature. Just my thoughts/opinion.

Just as not all deer shed their antlers at the same time, they do not all start growing at the same time. Give him until the second week of July before you can make any accurate predictions.

.... and I wonder WHY there won't be any big bucks around in certain areas when folks like you suggestto "kill 'em before someone else does!" ??? [:'(][:@]

Bottomline is that NO imamature buck should really be killed in the first place. If there isn't a very good chance that the buck will survive, it's still a LOT better chance than if YOU kill 'em now!

Good luck and good huntin'

Ido know one thing Corn Fed, if everyone elseis busy shooting the little bucks. They are not waiting for the good ones, they will be there for the ones that want them. That is a good thing inoneway.

Well it is nice to know that there are several young-ins in the area like this guy. This is from the cam and within hours of the first I posted. I got a total of five young bucks with the first series. What's interesting about this one is the girth of his main beams, though he's only a fourcompared to the first one with eight. Any input?

It's hard to make out because of the angle, but look at the ring at the base to get an idea.

Themajorityof antler growth takes place between the beginning of June and the end of July. It's hard to take a picture of a deer at the beginning/mid of June and determine how big he will be. You should be able to determine whether you are looking at a mature deer or an immature deer, but other than that you will not be able to make any accurate predictions.

Here are two examples of deer that I kept track of all of last year:

Deer #1, June 08, 2006

July 5th, 2006

Same deer, July 29, 2006

Another pic of the same deer, July 29, 2006

Here is example #2 from 2006. This buck I was able to get a few more pictures of during the growing process.

June 10th, 2006

June 10th, 2006

Notice the amount of growth that takes place in this picture, taken only three weeks later.
July 2nd, 2006

July 5th, 2006

July 20th, 2006

July 21st, 2006

My point is this:

In example one, you can see that there is a lot of antler growth that takes place during the mid to later part of July. But, in example two, the buck already has eleven scoreable points during the first part of July. Other than adding on some tine length, buck #2 was nearly done growing his antlers by the first week of July. Both fairly mature bucks for my area, and both of them on a different antler growing schedule.
