My girlfriend uses one and its a great gun. She claims it brings her bad luck because since she started using it she sees no deer. Other than that BS its a very nice gun. Nice and accurate.

rem 700 BDL, great reliable gun that holds its value pretty well and looks sharp while keeping that classic look with the walnut stock. wouldnt trade mine for any rifle seeing as how its my first deer rifle.

i dont agree with the NO 243 or your a pansy statement though. some people would just prefer shooting 243, i can take a 243 and kill any deer within 200 yards, it has the power to do so. my dad hunted with one until he was 40 and then it was stolen. caliber when it comes to whitetail deer is all personal preference, because we arent trying to take down a moose, deer are a relatively small bodied big game animal.

Ifyou can shoot a 30-06 as well as you can shoota .243, an ethical hunter would get the 30-06, because if he can put that 30-06 in the vitals, and he can do the same with the .243, then why choose the .243?A 30-06, if it hits the exact same area as a .243, with the same kind of bullet, lets say, Sierra Gameking, the 30-06, no argument, will do more damage than the .243, the reason people say the someone can still wound a deer, or that a .243 will kill a deer as good as a 30-06, or .300 Win. Mag., is that some people can't shoot the 30-06, or .308 if they're recoil shy, like, young hunters (i.e. 9 year olds whose bodies aren't changing yet to become adult), but a 16 year old, should be able to shoot at least a .308, heck, I'm not even 16 yet, and I shoot a .308 accurately, which is my gun.

A 16 year old, can, and should shoot a 30-06 instead of a .243. .243 is just a bare minimum, why do that, when you can get higher velocity, and bigger bullet mass and more powder, and shoot it just as well?
I would still recommend a recoil pad for an '06, especially if it'sa bolt-action, like a LimbSaver, it'll turn the '06 into a plinker, my grandpa did that with his Model 70 XTR, and I was amazed at the easiness of shooting that gun.
Plus, the recoil of a .30 caliber high-powered rifle, kinda feels good, sorta' saticfactory. It fuels your ego, lol.

Now, if he got a 7mm-08, that wouldn't be the bare minimum, it's a very powerful round, and although it kicks just a little more than the .243, it has noticably more power. But, still, the .308, being a .30 cal, would be better, plus it's got more ammo availability.

Bottom line, if the guy can't shoot the 30-06 well and deadly, and is going to miss deer, wound them, etc., THEN get the .243 or the .308 or the 7mm-08, but do the most you can well, that's my point, and sorry if I made a post too long when I was typing in a circle.

Depends on where you are, in Kansas, the Whitetail deer may be small, asyou say, but in Kansas they have Mule Deer, too, whichcan besomewhat bigger than Whitetail.

thats basically what it boils down to[8D]

any legal caliber will take down a deer. if you know where to place your bullets then you can even drop then in their tracks. which is what people should worry about more than getting a big bad caliber, shot placement. Not saying 30.06 isnt a great caliber, i think number 1 for all deer hunters, but it isnt the ONLY caliber for a deer rifle. I agree with your statements that 30.06 is a great possibly the best deer cartidge but it isnt the only one. it still boils down to personal preference. I dont mean to start an arguement either, just stating that they make more than one rifle caliber, and there is nothing unethical about choosing a smaller cailber. It may very well be the best all around rifle cailber, but shouldnt be forced as the only.

30-06 wont always produce greater velocity either, a lot of times it wont.

Why does everyone knock a 243 my six yr old shoots a rem. model 700 youth 243 and shot her firtst deer and dropped it like a box of rocks at 110 yrds with a 96 grain Winchester supreme Ballistic silvertip. It was a8 point that field dressed at 163 pounds.I take it with me when i go stalking because it is so light and eeasy to shoulder fast. Me I have been shooting a 1963 Winchester Model 77 Lever action .308 since I was 12 yrs old and absolutly love it to this day. but I like the .243 for ANYONE

My cousin is a highschool football player, who is 6' 2" and 200 lbs, so he will have no trouble handling a 30-06. Heck he took a big 11 point last year with my .270 which is essentially the same cartridge as the 30-06. I was more interested in everyones opinion on the Remington model 710 (which a vast majority of the people dislike). I'm not sure what my uncle wants to spend but I think he is looking to stay under $500 for both the rifle and scope.

i have a 710.. i know its a bottom end rifle.. but if this is bottom end whats a nice rifle like? lol cause mine shoots fine.. maybe it will last YEARS.. maybe not who knows.. i have had it for 3 season.. taken 6 deer so far with it.. very accurate.. i dropped a doe at 225 yards with it.. good gun besides the cheap parts i guess?everyone i read about says they have never heard anything good about it.. but i havent heard anything bad about it besides people saying its cheap and that it will not last a lifetime and all this stuff. maybe im wrong...oh but one more thing.. it is heavy compared to my buddys 243 savage.. then again its a 243 maybe its supposed to be that much lighter

I guess the 710 might be cheaper, since it comes as a gun/scope combo, but I think Savage does the same thing, too.
