I hear ya DD. But it really depends on what you consider to be peanut butter. If 50K worth of toys does it for ya, then more power to ya. If 50K of land does it, then more power to ya. But here we are likely dealing with SOME people who at some point had to made a choice between one or the other. And now they got lots of toys, but no place to play with them.

My mom and dad worked their @sses off to barely squeak out a living and give my sister, brother and I all that we needed. When the time came to college, they told me how much they could afford and I was on my own for the rest, about 80%. Middle class? I've looked at middle class from underneath. Right now my wife and I are living off a combined income below the poverty line for 1 person without any assistance.
Don't lecture me on the middle class and what it's like to not have money, I grew up in a family where real Kraft Mac N Cheese was a treat. I've been there done that and wore the ratty t-shirt to prove it. I've worked my ass off for everything I have ever had and will continue to do so my entire life.
Want proof? Each year I go deer hunting on public land with the same 20 guage my dad bought me when I was 12 (a dozen years ago) and if I get a deer, I tie it onto the back of a 10+ year old 2 door car with 148k miles and hope it makes it up the dirt/snow covered hill again this year so I can drive it home to my apartment. Please tell me what it is like to be rich, I'd love to know.

The length of my service depends on whether or not I do a Navy residency. If I don't, I'll be in 5 years, if I do a Navy residency depending on the length of my residency program, I will be in 7-10 years. This is where the variation comes in.

We didn';t even have hit most winters so even if we had jeans and pockets there wouldn't have been much to play with

well partner, i hear you barkin' up the sympathy tree here, but there's nothin' fallin' to the ground for ya from me.you sure do not sound like the "poor" type, just a conclusion made by your attitude, but maybe you are and were and therefore you deserve 1000 wooded acres and 40 virgins.unfortunately the things we do in life, no matter how respected they are,do not guarantee us anything. i am not rich but won't be as excited as you to claim to be poor either, my parents didn't pay for a dime of my college, simply put a roof over my head and I joined the Army to pay for tuition. hey man, just take a deep breath and one day when you are 45 you can have your loans paid off and purchase your own land, and maybe, just helping youfeed thatsurging ego you so dearly love, you can purchase the only property I have to hunt that I enjoy for free. my friend, I hope that one day I will be so lucky tobe at your side and wanderabout the timber and share a hunt!

I just think that something needs to be done to regulate outfitting, so that the locals can havea place to hunt and that the quality of IL whitetails remains.

I don't think you're even "on the paper" with this. Any good outfitter knows that the herd needs balancing and that in order to developbig bucks they're going to have to helpthin the does out. YES there are outfits that believe that "someone else will take care of all the does" but I think more try to help the balance.
Yes something does need to be done to regulate outfitting. There are rules in place now, but I agree it needs to go further. I would like to see mandatory doe (or 2) harvest before a buck can be taken. However let's look at this new call/log in check system. Many will buy the doe tags and just call them in w/o taking a doe in order to check in their trophy deer.
As far as "a place the locals can hunt" that needs to be addressed on a local level. But I'll tell you right now that you've got a nearly no-win situation there.In most of the good deer hunting areas of IL the economy isn't to good - ya know. So most anyone is gonna lease for the almighty dollars that buy them the things they need and want.
But to forget the state owned lands in this equation is not right. I for one know where I will be doing alot of hunting this year. I will hunt/scout it by bow leading up to firearms opener, and 2 hours before the sun comes up on firearm'sopening day I'm pretty darn sure where I'll be sitting - on a smaller parcel of state land instead of our200+ acres of private land.
Good luck and think positive. Sometimes think "outside of the box" - you might be suprised or even just get lucky.
