Yeah Bawa, if my old grand-dad had invested his paychecks in land instead of Mogan David wine, i would be a happy camper about right now. My dad did a little better, so us kids will have an old farmhouse and three acres to divvy up. But since i was the first to produce a grandson, I get the parcel with the stock pond on it. Just can't wait until the day when i can proudly nail up posted signs every ten feet around my acre.[&:]

I am often amazed at the people complaining about paying to get on to a hunting property. I'll look at their $35,000 hunting rig (which burns $3 a gallon gas at a rate of a gallon every five minutes), with a $5,000 ATV in the back, and a $1,000 rifle topped with a $750 scope, and wonder why they "can't afford" to hunt because a lease might cost them $500 or $1,000 or $2,000 per year. How much does your internet/satellite TV/six cell phones cost per month?

And of course it wouldn't be much of a hunting rig if it were lacking all the little stickers on the back window.
Every one needs a piss on # 24 sticker and this time of year a couple of those white turkey tracks look good. Then to top it off something along the lines of "Bow hunters have longer shafts" really impresses the ladies..[]

I don't know too many guys in their 20s with a young family that have all (or any) of those toys. But, it is a good point in regard to some people. My father shelled out over 5K for an ATV several years ago when that amount of money would have covered the down payment on 20 acres of good deer hunting woods. Throw in the money for all his other toys ranging from custom gutting knives to extra slug barrels and you could tack on another 10 acres.

I do feel for the 10% at the bottom of the pile, but it never ceases to amaze me on opening day to watch the parade of vehicles - trucks and ATVs. Sometimes it's difficult to say whether it's hunting season or a Sturgis-for-pickup-trucks rally.

I grew up at a time when a deer hunt consisted of nailing a few two-by-fours up in an old hollow maple tree a week or two before season. Then on opening morning, you loaded some slugs in the old rabbit/quail shotgun, put on work clothes, and drove your old truck to within a a quarter or mile or so of the stand, then walked in and out. Had I known that I actually needed a custom made centerline muzzle loader, V-8 four-wheel drive truck, ATV, head-to-toe Gander Mountain camo outfit, and a dozen different types of scent killers, doe scent, etc., etc., I would likely have just stayed at home..

Yeah, I think it's generally a bad idea to try to emulate these kinds of people. Having toys and having a good hunting season are two very different things. I really get the feeling that some people think you need these things to have a trophy hunt like you see on the cable shows. Deer are wily, and I believe really is more art than science. Warm clothes, a good rifle, and a sharp eye are all you really need.

Are you suggesting a man could go into the woods without an Ipod to listen to music on and a cell phone to play games on and still have any reasonable chance at bagging a buck!!!!!!!!![]
