thanx guys...now i am prepared if somthing like 308shtrs shot came up....i honeslty dont know if i can do it...all of my deer were running or moving pretty good...hunting in a thicket near the edge the deer are all being kicked into it or around it...thats why i became a good moving target shooter with a rifle fast..when the time comes i know where to shot though...thanx guys...

FYI, Tazman & Txcowboy, being i live in area that the average buck is 250 on the hoof with many reaching 300 and higher. I have witnessed in my 21 years 3 neck shot deer that never even reacted to the shot, 2 of which I witnessed. 1 deer this fall in fact was tacked through the neck meat but just kept coming to the grunting/rattling sounds, he was put down with a second shot to the shoulders. We thought he missed but when we inspected the animal, the shot went clean through only meat on the right side of the neck(probably only 1" or so from the neck itself...he was using 150 Gr Boattail out of an 3006) That deer weighed approx 275 on the hoof and had a decent sized swollen neck...but not huge.

While I agree the neck shot or head shot if excuted will put the animal down quickly, you must be aware of the possibility of the the less than desored outcomes. Mauser shooting a buck in the head is not the thing to do, especially if you want to mount or score him. A broken skull and no score! I guess you can decide if that matters to you, though. If the deer is facing you straight on aim for were the neck meets the shoulder and center of mass, this way if you drop your hairs you'll blow in the shoulder and get vitals, especially at 50 yards hucking 165 lead. If the deer is walking away..well that is a tough one. I personally wouldn't shoot that shot unless i saw the animal enough to determine he was a shooter...than I would have to say aim at the base of the neck and center of mass again. Or if you like a fun cleaning job...you can fire it up the HOOP! While it is messy & waste of meat, a busted pelvis will result in a deer on the dirt like now!(also alot of room of error, nobody can deny that...but nobady will also say it is shot they'd suggest either)

Mauser, nobody is questioning your a good enough shot to pull off the neck, only you can determine that. It's just you asked if broadside were do you aim for a neck shot...IMO this is a stupid decision to make with a 06 and 50 yards. Part of learning and asking for opinion is getting answer you may not want to hear, it is ultimately up to you to decide what you want to take and use.

I have only shot 2 in the neck both dropped in their tracks, luck i guess. The first was 130 yards and hit it dead center in the base of the neck where it meets the shoulders. The second was walking away from me at about 65 yards in the back of the neck. Both shots were with a 30-30 using 170 gr. core-lokts. The only spot i have heard of that drops them every time is the top of the shoulder blade where it meets the spine.

Ive shot many does in the neck and every one of them except for one has dropped its tracks. The one that didnt drop i its tracks was a doe a shot in the jugular vein i wentabut 20 yds and piled up there. I ruin less meat and it in my opinion isa good clean kill. I alo shoot a shotgun with deer slugs and that may be different that a rifle expansion on impact. thanks

Taz I think you got me confused with someone else I have never taken a neck or head shot, and yes we do have small targets but we have alot of them.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I won't take the neck shot, I've seen too many deer killed in my club that were shot in the neck above the spine by some other guy a half a mile away on the other side of the field. On any decent sized deer, you shoot a couple of inches high, there's nothing there but muscle. Just remember when you take the neck shots, if you're a couple or more inches high, you could be condemning the deer to die days later.
Never could figure why someone wouldn't want to shoot them in the chest? The only good shot is a broadside shot for the average hunter, even more so for the younger, less experienced guys. I take John Wooten's advice, picture a basketball in the center of the deer's chest, and aim for the center. Sure, if the deer's close, and relaxed, I may take the heart shot or lung shot to not waste any meat, but why get fancy? No other shot leaves as much margin of error as the chest shot, you have 6 inches or so, at least, in every direction, andd you're still in the kill zone. You miss by half that high on the neck, you have a wounded deer.

I take neck shots all the time. My father takes them too. We have never lost a deer we shot in the neck. They have all fallen right away. Between the two of us we have close to 50 years experience, and numerous kills. We both shoot a .270 with super X bullets (they used to be superX, now i think they're the silver tips or whatever).

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to sever the spinal cord to take them down right away. If you're a little low, it won't actually sever the spinal cord, but it will rip the neck out. When taking neck shots, if you aim for a little bit above the middle of the neck, you'll be fine. Now, if you can't hit the bottom of a Coke can at 100 yards consistantly, then i wouldnt take a neck shot. I dont ALWAYS take neck shots, if its near dark or raining, or if something just doesn't seem right, i take the shoulder shot. But on a nice sunny clear day, and that deer is standing broadside, I go for the neck. If you do break the neck, then it sure makes it easy to cut the head off though.

Anyways, thats my experience.

I guess we're about evenly divided on this, as we all have different experiences with shooting deer and which shots we see as more humane. Too many variables come into play which make any one of them perfect.

I know I've shot deer at one time or another through the lungs, through the shoulder, through the heart and through the neck, and I have to admit, the central neck shot is something to behold. It instantly stops all movement of a deer into sudden paralysis as it bleeds the jugular dry. If you don't have good shootin' ability and put one through it's esophagus, well you're in for some bad luck and a lost deer.

50 yard broadside chance on a still deer, easily a neck shot. 100 or more yards away broadside, go for the chest shot. Got a deer facin' ya, put one low through it's chest. Head shot? Nah, I'm not a gamblin' man.
