RE: M1 Carbine for deer??
Mavwreck, Why do you ask this question? Do you currently own an M1 and are looking to hunt with it? Or are you considering purchasing one for Deer hunting? If you already own one, pay close attention to BigJ12's reply as He pretty much sum'd things up for you ( M1 is on the very light side ). I would not purchase an M1 for Deer hunting, but I would definitely pursue owning one due to it's historic value alone.
I have lost two Deer due to under powered rounds: 762X39 122grn softpoint (samson-IMI) @ 40 yards, and 357mag 180grn Black Talon @ 75 yards ( and yes the real black talon that is not avail. to the public anymore). Both Deer should have been dead yet both got away. I consider myself a better than expert shot and an experienced Deer hunter. Both shots where taken at the ranges you are talking about. I do not hunt with either of these calibers anymore, except off season for coy-dogs.
Younggun243 states some hunt with 22-hornet. That's OK if you can deal with a percentage of wounded / non-recovered animals. I can not, I'm still kicking myself after more than 15yrs for losing those (2) Deer. May God forgive me.

M-1 = marginal rifle for deer. Sure a .22 or .22 Hornet will kill a deer, but so will a 67 Ford pickup or a hammer and I'm not going to hunt with either one.

I was wondering if a .30 carbine is enough for deer if hunting in a wooded areawith maximum shot distances of 40 to 50 yards. Not brushy really. Just very wooded. (Remington 110 grn SP ammo)

It is not a good choice, and there are many negatives to using this caliber. It is still, however, ENOUGH for deer at 40-50 yards.
If a 357 magnum pistol is ENOUGH, then the 30 carbine certainly is too.

I have used an M1 Carbine to deer hunt. Never pulled the trigger twice and never slipped away. I reached out 130 yards with the .30 Caliber Carbine and the deer laid down like I told it to. I think I have 5 deer with that gun alone.

I have killed many deer with a .357 magnum rifle, given my farthest shot was only 75 yards. It has made quicker kills then any of my compound bow or crossbow kills, I see little differenence in a .357 or a 12 gauge slug under 100 yards if you achieve a proper shot through the lungs. I would be confident to use a .30 carbine but if that was legal so would a .270, .308, or a 30/06 so I would rather use a real high powered rifle that I could easily shoot well past 100 yards.

I think you would be best advised to check with your local game warden. In Minnesota, this would not be a legal caliber for deer hunting.

You are asking what would be a simply answered question to most people. You must be fairly inexperienced at deer hunting. I would hold off on that carbine until more familiar with how deer react to getting hit with different bullets. I use .22 centerfires a lot and listen to people preach at me all the time. I have been hunting a long time and have only lost one deer to a rifle and I was using a 30-40 Krag. It is O.K. to go minimum, ONCE you have some experience shooting deer.
