Here we go,,,

1. Shooting ability - A-
2. Scent control -C
3. Tracking - C
4. Discipline of sound, light and movementwhile hunting- C-
5. Scouting -B
6. Dressing deer -B+
7. Pre-hunt preparation -A+
8. Safety - A
The thing I would really like to improve would be the ability to move more quietly through the woods getting to stand etc.. I am fine once I have gotten in the stand, I can remain still and quiet but getting there is like two elephants mating on bubble wrap. I have been practicing by stalking squirrels but there is still alot of room for improvement!

There is always room to improve on every aspect of this as a hunter. We all learn new stuff all the time.

C is average; deviation one side or the other implies better or worse than average.

I take pains to zero my rifle and practice before the season with the same load I will use before the season. I'm not as good a shot as I would like to be, but I think this pre-season work distinguishes me from the average.

I don't take any pains to reduce my scent -- no scent lok, no scent free soap -- but I do take pains to keep the wind in my face.

I have done some blood tracking and consider myself to be above average, but maybe that is an exaggeration and I am just average

I take a lot of trouble to take advantage of shadows and screening vegetation when I set up. I don't wear camoflage, mostly because with advantageous use of shadows and screening vegetation camo doesn't matter (for a rifle hunter such as me, maybe bow hunting is different). I am very controlled in my movements and the sounds I make. Thus, I give myself an A in this category.

I don't scout. I have hunted the same 160 acre patch of ground for 5 years and know it very well. So I don't scout and consider myself to be below average. Sure I notice if there are tracks, but I don't make an effort. I don't need to, as I typically get deer. I'm not a trophy hunter so any mature deer -- buck or doe -- works for me.

I do all my field dressing, skinning, quartering, butchering, and processing. I guess I'm above average on this.

I do a thorough job of getting prepared before the season. I stay in good physical shape year round. I get packed up several days in advance. I take a back-up rifle in case the number one rifle fails. I have clothes to suit any weather conditions I might encounter.

I hope I am above average safe. I don't use tree stands but only use improvised ground blinds. This is a major enhancement of safety right there, just not using tree stands. I always wear my hunter orange.

Of course, all of these are rather subjective ratings. I would be prepared to lower all my B grades to a C grade and my A grade to a B grade if pushed.

I would add one...Discipline or self control when taking the shot, doesn't matter what weapon used....Right after Safety, I feel this is the most important...

Everyone needs to learn to only take a shot within their limitaions and their weapons limitations that results in a quick kill...If you have any doubt, don't take it...

Is the ability to purchase scent reducing merchandise more valuable than the ability to play the wind???
