RE: 308. Brush gun....or not a Brush gun
Greets,
Well , first let me say that I realize no weapon should be fired "into the brush" thats just plain stupid as the many accidents each year prove.
As for the .308, its a good caliber, I fired it out of the M-14 with great accuracy when I was in the Navy. In any reasonable rifle configuration it should prove to be a good round for 200+ yard ranges ( much more in the right hands )
As for the Term " brush gun " I always had the opinion that a "brush gun " was simply a good shorter barreled lever rifle that was easy to maeuver for a quick shot in the cover of brush. My Older brother has just such a rifle in .308, and I assure you that if he scoped it it would be a 200+ yard rifle easily and possibly ( though I wouldnt do it on game ) 300 or 400 yards accurate, assuming the shooter is that good.

Hunter 2006, I have my Father's Remmington 742 Woodsman carbine in .308, also with a 3x9 Bushnell. This a very good rifle. Good on power lines and good in the woods. Some police special units use the .308 in their sniper rifles. If you compare to the 30/06, there is very little ballistic difference.

outdoorsman,
Let me guess, 150 grain pointed Cor-Locs
IMO are made for 30-06 or above. Not my #1 pick.
I hear the 130 Hornady is nice try it, lemme' know.
I'll try the 170 first and report back.
There's a dif. between a sea anchor and a rock anchor and then...there's others as well,

I LOVE my rem .308 semi.Iron sights.I use 180 gr. core-loc.I shot a deer this year at about 20yds.No worries, hit the heart, deer mule kicked and bulldozed his way about 35 yds. front legs dragging 'cause all that was working were the two back ones.Deader than dead.I never worry about a 180gr. bullet going right through my deer. The damage is ALWAYS lethal!<img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>

outdoorsman I have shot a lot of deer with 150 grain core-loks and it knocks them flat if you hit them in the vitals! Tell your dad to shoot core-loks. BTW I have never heard of a "pointed Cor-Locs" Billyb, I am not saying they are not made, but I have never seen nor heard of them.

"pointed soft point" "SPS" I think is what he is refering to TAZ.
I too, have shot alot of deer with a 150gr bullet from my .308. If they didn't drop then I didn't hit the spine. I've had deer drop from shots to the vitals, but not all the time. I've tracked deer 150yds after I've blown up the heart. That was a deer shot with my .257 Roberts 100gr BTSP. You could have shot that deer with a .375 H&H and had the same results.
As far as "brush gun", it's a perfectly legit term. A brush gun should be defined as: A light-weight rifle designed to be quick handling, short, and offering speedy follow-up shooting.
If it were only that easy!

Taz,
What do those bullets you've used look like?
No big deal but just to let you know,
I'm reading this directly from the end flap of a box of Remington green and yellow boxes of 270 and 308 for examples:
270win 130 grain Core-Lokt 'Ptd'(for pointed) Soft Pt
308win 180 grain Core-Lokt Pointed Soft Point
Also on the back of the boxes there is pictures of several: PSP for their general soft points, PSP Core-Lokt self explanatory, Power Lokt Hollow Point for varmints and targets and finally our tried and true Soft Point Core-Lokt with it's round nosed picture.
Brush gun, almost sounds like 'Trench Broom' from the roaring twenties.LOL
Jason,
Good description.
